Last time, I said I’d be writing up Sherlock or Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. But time has since passed and the Legion has invaded the shores of Azeroth once again. In the downtime between dungeon runs and auction babysitting, I took the time to write up The Crown. The Crown is Netflix’s most ambitious drama yet in terms of budget, and seeks to portray Queen Elizabeth II’s years, from early adulthood to… well, we don’t know yet (#sixseasonsandamovie #wronghashtag). The point of this sentence is not that there isn’t a diagnosis. The information conveyed may be as such, but the point is that there is intent behind not mentioning a diagnosis. This is more clear if you listen to the audio; the accent lies on the word “conspicuously.” But the translation fails to convey the intent of the sentence, and therefore gets a failing grade.

Currently when you search “lung resection,” it refers to a technique whereby you remove a wedge shaped part of the lung (wedge resection), possibly for diagnostic purposes. However, you just saw the surgeons remove a whole lung; why would you say it’s for a test? What insane surgeon would possibly remove a whole lung for testing. Why. Is it too much to ask for common sense? In any case, the word “resection” refers to any excision of body parts.

This is a tricky one. The “it” is “structural alterations”; and the “word” is cancer. If George VI’s bloody hankerchiefs and the blackened lung wasn’t enough of a clue, add this and even the thickest among you must get that the king has lung cancer. The doctor’s report is dancing around saying the word “cancer,” because at the time that such diagnosis meant a death sentence. So the point of this sentence is:
1) the delicate tiptoeing around saying the word cancer
2) actually putting the word cancer in the audience’s mind.
If you don’t get these two points, of course you’re not going to get the translation right. And while the subtitles are kind of right, it’s not quite so. It’s like that TOEFL question where you have to figure out how to paraphrase the sentence without losing any of its constituent parts; and the transition has lost about 2%.
정말 애매한 번역이다. 사실 직역한 걸 한 3번 의역해서 건너뛰면 지금 자막이 되긴 한다. 그런데 TOEFL 의 그 ‘문장을 제대로 paraphrase 한 선택지를 고르시오’ 문제에 나온 오답처럼, 그 몇번의 의역을 거치면서 본 문장의 2%를 잃어버렸다.
처칠 총리가 그 진단서에 쓰인 “구조적 변이(it)” 가 뭔지 물었고, 처칠의 주치의가 대답하는 장면이다. 조지 6세의 각혈과 새카맣게 변한 폐 정도면 충분히 알 수 있지 않나? “구조적 변이” 라는 건 사실 암을 가르키는 완곡한 표현이라는 걸. 그러나 그 시대에 암이라는 진단은 사형선고나 다름없었기 때문에 진단서에 그렇게 쓸 수는 없었다. 그러면 위 문장이 표현하고 싶은 것은 두 가지로 요약할 수 있는데,
1) 암이라고 쓰고 싶지 않은 상황에서 열심히 돌려 말하면서
2) 실제로 암이라는 단어를 시청자들의 머리 속에 각인 시켜야 함
어떤 단어를 쓰지 않고 그 단어를 각인시키라니 좀 매우 어렵다. 그러나 한국어라는 건 매우 신기해서 “결정적인 표현” 앞에 “그”를 붙여서 “그 결정적인 표현” = 암 이라는 걸 성립시켜 주면 생각보다 쉽게 고쳐진다.

This one is a bit more blatant. The translator has completely missed who “his” is referring to. “His” is in the third person and refers to Churchill; not the second person which is the king. The correction to the second sentence might sound like I’m being picky. But later in the series you learn that the PM does not sit and it has been a tradition. So it might do well to translate the word “sit,” rather than just saying the chair is unnecessary.
His 를 your 로 생각해서 벌어진 오역이다. 아니 본문에 잘 적혀 있잖아요… 또한 두번째 문장에 [총리는 앉지 않는다]를 번역하지 않고 필요 없다고만 적어 뒀는데 스토리 전개를 생각하면 제대로 번역해야 한다. 나중에 가야 밝혀지지만 군주와의 독대에서 총리가 앉지 않는 것은 전통이었기 때문이다.

Someone being “up to it” could be interpreted in so many ways. But in this scene,
1) They’re talking about “breaking” Elizabeth in to her public service role.
2) George hasn’t yet asked Elizabeth if she is willing to go. (This happens later)
So rather than Elizabeth’s willingness to go on this tour, it’s more likely that it’s about her readiness and ability to take on a more public role. Just saying.
“Up to it” 은 너무나 해석될 여지가 많다. 그러나 이 문맥을 좀 살펴보자면:
1) 엘리자베스를 슬슬 공적인 자리에 세워야 한다고 말함
2) 아직 엘리자베스가 가고 싶은지 물어보지도 않았음 (뒤에 물어본다)

This is really subtle because the sentence could go a million ways without actually listening to the intonation, plus the context, plus Philip’s nonverbal cues.
정말 애매하다. 한국어 번역도 애매하고 영어 문장도 애매해서 이 모든 걸 이해하려면 실제 오디오도 들어봐야 하고 문맥도 파악해야 하며 심지어 필립의 비언어적 행동의 의미까지 파악해야 한다.
- The guy on the boat offers Philip some assistance;
수행원 중 하나가 필립을 도와주려고 하는데, - Philip declines said offer;
필립이 그 손길을 거절하고 나서, - Philip nearly capsizes his boat;

So even though Philip is a naval man (wink) he doesn’t seem stable on a little boat. Philip is trying to laugh off his freshwater blunder by referring to his command of the frigate HMS Magpie. If he can handle a frigate, [he can handle a tiny fishing boat]. In any case, the accent is on the word “handle,” not on “if.” If you want to get technical about it, Philip used the if clause in the zero conditional (using if to refer to factual implications); but the translator understood it as the second conditional (using if to express clauses contrary to present facts).
그래서 필립은 해군임에도 불구하고 이 작은 나룻배에서 제대로 설 줄 모르는 거 같다. 필립은 이때 소형 구축함 HMS Magpie 를 지휘하는 소령이었는데 이걸 언급함으로써 이 쪽팔린 상황을 웃어넘기려고 하는 것이다. 소형 구축함도 운용하는데 이 [작은 나룻배] 쯤이야… 이런 뜻인데 지금 자막에서는 “~운용할 줄만 안다면요” 라고 써서 운용할 줄 모르는 것처럼 만들어놨다. 왜 우리 필립을 멍청하게 만들어요.

In the second screenshot, it’s perfectly unnatural because Cpt. Townsend — who is not yet even engaged to the Princess Margaret — calls QE2 (his vast superior) “Lilibet.” By using that name, he’s showing that he already considers himself a part of the royal family and close enough to QE2 that he elects to forgo all the honorifics and styles (like, Your Majesty) and call her Lilibet. A lowly Captain, not even engaged, just in a highly publicized relationship with Princess Margaret, called her by a family nickname. She is very uncomfortable throughout the audience and consequently decides to exile Townsend to Brussels. Because she has a right to be royally pissed off.
그러나 6에피에선 하나도 자연스럽지 않다. 타운센드 대령은 아직 마거릿과 약혼도 하지 않은, 그냥 공개적 연애를 하는 것일 뿐인데 엘리자베스 2세에게 릴리벳이라고 부른 것이다. 그 이름을 씀으로써 타운센드는 자기 자신을 왕실의 일원이라고 생각한다는 것을 드러냈고, 고작 대령이 여왕에게 “폐하 (your Majesty)” 도 생략하고 말을 한 것이다. 엘리자베스는 얼마나 화가 났을까? 이 대화 동안 엘리자베스는 거의 타운센드를 쳐다보지도 않는다. 이후, 엘리자베스는 타운센드를 브뤼셀로 “유배”시키게 된다.
All this was to point out the importance of “Lilibet.” It’s not something that can or should be used interchangeably with Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth, or Her Majesty. It’s a family nickname; and it serves a narratorial purpose. However, the translator(s) decided to use 엘리자베스 (Elizabeth) in the first episode and then 릴리벳 (Lilibet) in the sixth episode. Get your consistency and continuity straight.
이 모든 건 “릴리벳” 이라는 이름이 얼마나 중요한지를 설명하기 위해서였다. 릴리벳이라는 별명은 엘리자베스 [공주님] [폐하] [여왕] 이라는 이름과 그냥 바꿔쓸 수 있는 이름이 아니다. 심지어 릴리벳이라고 부른다는 사실 자체가 스토리 전개에 영향을 준다. 그런데 분명히 번역은 그냥 에피소드마다 바꿔쓰고 있다. 제발 일관성 좀 지킵시다…
