Comic book heroes. Didn’t you want to be one when you were a kid? I sure did. I wanted to be able to see through walls, fly from home, save people from danger, or even just be able to run away. When we lived overseas, I loved watching shows like Speed Racer — what a life they had.

Unlike my heroes, I didn’t see myself as having any special skills as a kid. I was gawky. Too tall. Klutzy. I didn’t know that I could do things other people couldn’t. Then, computers came into my life my Junior year in High School. I discovered that I understood the machines better than most.

That led me to my superpower. It would take me years to understand how much better I was at them than most. But what I was best at wasn’t coding or explaining them. It was breaking them. Or.. As I learned to call it: Finding the broken pieces of it.

A couple of years ago, I even wrote a one line prompt piece about my superpower:

This week, I want you to tell me about superpowers. What is yours? What difference does your superpower make in the world? How did you learn you have it? (If you don’t feel comfortable talking about your own superpower, no problem. Tell us about someone else’s.)

The prompt for Tuesday, January 21st, 2020 is all about superpowers. Poetry, photo essays, essays, stories.. send them our way!

Please be sure to give your piece the tag “Superpower”. The other four tags can be anything you wish. If you are looking for our submission guidelines, you can find them here:
