The word that you’ll hear most often during this interview — apart from the the many f**ks and c***suc**rs — is “respect”.

From a man known for his erratic, weird and sometimes violent temperament, such a word might sound strange. He doesn’t look or behave like the man who respects somebody or something. Instead he has some rules and the most important one is that you have to earn respect and be respectful to those who deserve it.

He did like that with some of the great directors he worked with, like Cimino, Coppola and Aronofsky. Coming from the street and from a really tough youth, it’s easy to understand that to earn his respect you have to be strong as him or even stronger: not in a physical but in a moral way. It’s a jungle out there, and Mickey is maybe wounded, but he’s still a lion.
