This was a very well written and easy to read book, I found myself not wanting to put it down. So, Leticia Lili‘uokalani Lang, the strong main female character, is returning to Hawaii after she was sent to boarding school in San Francisco, in an effort to turn her into a lady, however. Letty loves animals, so this really just started her quest for a new dream, to be a veterinarian. Her love of animals was as big as her attitude.
Upon arriving, she discovers a horse in the water and it cannot swim and is indeed in trouble and is struggling in the water, so what does she do? She does what she feels is needed, she jumps in to save it. That is when she discovers she’s an mākāhā, a Gate to the healing fires of the land, and her hair turns a bright red. When she jumps into the water to save the horse, the ancient power that lives with in her is very intense. Her connection to the islands becomes stronger, and now she needs to learn how to use her magic and Kumu helps her.
Letty meets Mr. Timothy Rowley; it was his horse Diablo that she saved from drowning and he doesn’t know what to make of Letty. After spending time with her, he discovers the gift she has with animals. Letty does find Timothy intriguing and would be willing to start a relationship with him except for one little detail, with her power a kiss from her is enough to kill him and she must control her feelings towards him.
After a man attacks her, Timothy finds her and saves the day and the dog. They share a kiss that she was scared would hurt him worse than the stab wound.
Can Timothy and Letty get beyond her fear of her power and what it could do to him if they became romantically involved? I could tell you, but then, what fun would that be? You should go grab the book from whatever platform you read on and see for yourself.
