Do not give him a lap dance
Any strategy game, even the ones that suck, will reveal you the secret of a universal truth: A great army is a necessary condition for great state. It is not a sufficient condition, but it is a necessary one.
Any strategy game will offer you the second fortune cookie: Men without power succumb to emotional delusions about freedom and democracy. The powerful doesn't care about political concepts, ideologies and all this kind of monstrous human creations. The state in charge leads the race.
At your pick of your power, make some friends. Do not wait the moment when you have lost a war or your economy sucks. Nobody wants a loser for a friend, except to exploit him more. When you are in charge, make alliances with other powerful people. It will prevent a downward fall.
If you don’t know the loser at the game, then it is probably you. That is to say, if one of your opponents is angry at you, because you don’t share resources, another one raises his military on the borders, prepare for a war. Do not be a Chamberlain.
If the greatest power of the game, let’s say, USA is angry at your politics, you do the right thing for your people. When the powerful goes easy on you, then, most probably you give him a lap dance.
No morals, really, when it comes to politics. Read Nietzsche, Machiavelli and try Civilization VI. They will teach you the truth. Really.
