Five Overrated Places in San Diego
You heard this place was dope
Two things happen while you’re in San Diego.
Either A) You just turned 18 and looking for things to do
or B) You just moved here from out of town.
Soliciting advice from your neighbor, co-worker, friend of a cousin, results on where to go/eat/hang out/get smashed while watching your home team on Sunday. When following through on these places, you find out it also happens to be one of the worst ideas known to Saint Diego, Patron Saint of the Good Life.
Drink up, let’s run down the five overrated places in San Diego.
5. Dave and Buster’s.
Everyone kicked it at DnB on Thursday nights. Under 21? ✓ No cover? ✓ Knew someone 25+? ✓ There was no way you could say no to video games, drunk or sober. Like most things in San Diego for the under 21 crowd, they get worn out fast and because of overpriced drinks, I like to stay away from DnB unless it’s 1pm and I’m with my 12 year old nephews. No need to introduce them to DnB nights.
Alternate with: Drinking at home with your Xbox
4. Tapioca Express on Convoy.
I used to kick it here a lot post-high school because friends from out of town leaned on their TapEx familiarity for their boba fix. I just can’t deal anymore because not only is there too much sugar in their drinks, it usually takes 20 minutes to get a parking spot. Folks here also like to create parking spots. Protect ya neck, son.
Alterate with: Tapoica Heaven or O’Briens in the same plaza
3. East Village Tavern + Bowl.
When you walk in the East Village, especially post-Padres loss, you get bowling urges like watching ESPN2 circa ‘96. I do enjoy this spot, when it’s not crowded because of the taplist and the fun I get during buzzed bowling. The strikes against this place are obvious. If you’re not living in the East Village, parking doesn’t justify the crowds and the wait. During that wait you could definitely hit up the other Tavern + Bowls and get a lane.
Alernate with: North County Tavern + Bowl or Kearny Mesa Bowl
2. Sushi Deli (1,2,and 3)
Bro, you know damn well that with those prices you can easily walk, but you just had to pick a spot that she wanted to hit up. The ambiance lacks and the fish isn’t even that tight. Their rolls are sauce and savory heavy, so easy pass. Plus good luck with a table at any of these locations, they’re all glorified closets.
Alternate with: Sushi Ota or Todo Sushi
- PB Bar & Grill
You knew this was coming. Out of towners think all we do is drink on a beach and surf. Up until ‘09 that was true, but drinking at Bar & Grill has that stereotype covered until infinity (at least until the puking on the dance floor finally shuts down Bar & Grill). People hype this place up as the quintessential SD spot, but when you walk in, it’s meh. Sometimes you’ll see the soccer dad whose seen better days and you wonder, is that guy having a better time than the Vegas-style restroom attendant?
Alternate with: Tavern at the Beach, PB Ale House, SD TapRoom
