Any startup starts out with what I would call essentially an identity crisis:
Who are we?
What is our mission?
What do we do?
What is our product/service?
Will the world accept us?
The sooner this is clear the better everyone will feel. So when you get your identity straight shout is from the rooftops. So yes, a big plastic logo is required.
