it’s all about happiness

In our modern world, people look for the best product. Or the cheapest (I could have linked one of the many price compare sites here). Nobody cares about happiness. Do you?

In the IT world the competition is maybe bigger than anywhere else. Startups come and go, everybody wants to create the first and the best product. They think this is the only way to survive.

It’s wrong. It should be all about happiness. If the customer is happy, proud to use your product, then you won. It doesn’t even has to be the best or have the biggest market share.

Let’s see two examples. I am typing in this post in a Firefox browser. You think, wow this guy is crazy. This is not 2006. It’s 2013. Switch to Chrome, that is now the best. Sure, but I disagree. What Mozilla does with Firefox, that keeps me firing up every other day.

Being part of the Mozilla family makes people happy.

Firefox just turned 9 years. You hit the home in your browser and you’ll see this:

Firefox is 9 years old.

Supporting and helping others won’t make you less. It is going to make you better.

The other example is Buffer. If you didn’t hear from Buffer yet, it’s an online service for scheduling your updates to various social media sites. And if it’s only just another service, than I think nobody would care about. But it is special.

They not only make a service, but they have a blog. OK, it’s not very special for a tech startup to have a blog, but it is special what they blog about. And this is all about happiness.

Being a Buffer user makes you feel special. At the moment you scheduled your first tweet or Facebook update, you know there is no turning back. Your life changed.

It’s all about happiness. Not about being the best and eliminating the competition. And I just finish my 2 minutes writing with a quote from Warren Buffett.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
