Let me pay you a moderate wage for your comfortable airline.

Because, I will.


Lately, and previously, I’ve been on an airplane a lot. As such, I inevitably need to vent about the state of the airline industry. However, even more than vent I need answers on the economics that drive this industry’s decisions. I’ve been baffled for some time why a premium airline has not emerged to claim victory by providing a better user experience. I’m not talking Blackjet premium. This premium fee would be somewhere between current coach prices and first class. I don't want to pay $400 to fly to NYC. I don't want to pay $1100 to fly to NYC. I want to pay about $700.

At this price point I would expect first class treatment throughout the entire cabin - But it wouldn’t be called first class, as this airline would be classless. It would simply be called a good fucking experience.

I have to believe this, like everything, comes down to math. I haven’t done the math, because I’m on a plane typing this mindless rant, not doing actual research. With that said, devoid of all research, and with an utter lack of statistical proof, I’m going to go ahead and claim it would economically lucrative for the airline to have all cabin seats paying almost double the average coach fare. Perhaps the research shows there isn’t a large enough market segment that will pay that for a premium service? But, if Uber can do it for cabs, why not planes?
