Maybe it’s time for “Community” to let the curtain fall

After 4 (on its way to 5) tremulous season barred with Chase-Harmon bickering, maybe an end is necessary

If community is to be cancelled because of ratings, then by that logic, NBC should cancel itself. The ratings is not related on this matter.

If you’re a community fan, you would probably want to stab me to death or wish for me to be attacked by blorgons.

But I know, that deep inside, there is truth to what I’m saying (or what I will say).

After the announcement that Community’s show runner and creator: Dan Harmon, would be leaving after the third season. Many was skeptical about what would happen with the show, even if the new show runners assured the fans that they will do their best to maintain and preserve the magic Dan Harmon created.

But after Season 4, you can’t deny the feeling that Community is not the same anymore.

Season 4 had strong episodes, particularly the episodes: Basic Human Anatomy and Heroic Origins. But the rest specially the season 4 finale, are sub par to what Community has to offer in the last 3 seasons. Even Dan Harmon himself is not pleased with it.

Dan Harmon and Co. capitalized on all things meta. Introducing plot points and twists outside the community universe. They also added flare on story telling that TV fans enjoyed and loved. Knowing that this entices community fans, Community writers focused on too much meta references and ended up disregarding some aspects of the show, particularly: Character Development

Jeff Winger—played by Joel McHale—Is the character who had the least share of development through out the series. Sure, the snarky, I-don’t-care-guy is part of Jeff’s design but sometimes you just can’t help but notice how Jeff develops a concern for the study group and becomes a leader then “resets” on the next episode. Sometimes it will still be difficult to see if Jeff really likes the group or he just uses them for his advantage.

The last episode of season 4, shows that Jeff is sort of not sure about graduating as demonstrated with evil version of themselves. It goes to show that Jeff from the start is not sure about what he should be doing in his life. Jeff fails to trust the group that no matter what happens, the Greendale 7 (Now 6) will always stick together no matter what — A fact that Jeff fails to realize.

Britta, also started as a strong character in the series. I particularly liked Britta before they dumbed her down and made her the epitome of failure. They Britta’d, Britta.

And Chevy Chase’s character—Pierce Hawthorne—Didn’t seem to be part of the group and became a baggage to the group. But the off screen issues may have played some part in this.

Not all was guilty of “character underdevelopment”. Troy developed from a “douche-bag jock” to a lovable “pillow-fighting man wife of Abed”. Unfortunately we will be seeing less of Troy, because Donald Glover—who plays Troy—will be appearing less in community to focus on his rapping career. So Greendale 5?

While on the outskirts of the study room, looming on the halls of Greendale Community College—The people behind community are also trying to recover from its recent storms.

The Chase-Harmon battle of 2012 became too personal that, in part it caused the Dan Harmon sacking and Chevy Chase leaving the show. It didn’t do the show any better. It created a buzz around the show, but the ratings didn’t do well.

From a story about 7 unlikely strangers meeting on the study room, Community had a great run of comedy. Now, community seems to lack that brand of comedy and cleverness it had. They can try another paintball episode, but that would be too much and overplayed. It’s not the same anymore.

Even though it has been announced that Dan Harmon is returning for Season 5. There is no guarantee that he can salvage the show’s decline, and Harmon must do his best and do less on-set sleeping to save Community.

Community had some great moments, and honestly I wouldn’t mind if the show will come to an end while its reputation is still intact. With some of the writers and cast moving on, Maybe it’s best to see them graduate Greendale.

Also, NBC your weird shifting schedule of your shows is not helping them and your efforts to bring back the glory days of Must See TV. Get Yo shit together!
