Being a single, attractive woman for a couple of decades makes you sort of a therapist. In the sense that you often get to see men (and women) at their worst, to hear the back-stories, to see the character traits that people normally keep from polite society. Traits that people with families are too busy to notice or to care about. After all, what do you care if the Happy Couple your kid has play-dates with is really a giant complacent farce? Or that a good third of the Happy Young Fathers you know actively (very actively) cheated on their pregnant wives? Or that most people don’t choose their destiny or their spouse or their future, but let it choose them? Or that fear is the glue that keeps most marriages together. You don’t. You mind your own business, you are Polite Society. And I’m the one who knows its secrets.
