I spend several days of the year at Manchester’s Business School and was asked by students the difference in sales and marketing.

An instant analogy was needed that could be delivered in less than a minute, which would enable us to think about it and pick up at our next meet.

“Day after day, a great salesperson stood at a roadside pitch from daybreak to sundown with beautiful, freshly picked, grade A pineapples. Not a single car passed by.

The problem, of course, was the road.

Assistance from a great marketing person would have revealed that the road hadn’t been travelled down in 100 years, and that the road around the corner had.
