The Great Internet Fire
Why the internet changes our idea of normal.
Every major civilization has had a massive destructive fire; something terrible to destroy entire cities and force us to rebuild anew. For our generation, our greatest potential will lie in the destruction of everything we know by the internet.
I hear a lot about “hyper connectivity” and the internet of things, but mostly people marvel at the democratization of tools of creation and can’t imagine what will come next. The internet is giving anyone the tools to do anything they want, be it bringing water to parched sections of the globe, change the way businesses raise money, or even find a new way to travel.
With so much money pouring into tech, people of all shapes, sizes and inclinations are able to disrupt established industries in just a few months. The Great Internet Fire is still spreading.
What happens when everything is disruption and nothing is normal anymore?
There will come a time when the technology gold rush will dissipate: nothing lasts forever. When the fire finally dies down, only a few will be left standing. Give everyone the tools to build what they can imagine, and only a few will become exceptional. You can see it in established industries and new ones, and these will be the ones left standing to rebuild our ideas of “normal.” A Google search will not only help build Google’s revenue, but become a crutch society leans on much like electricity. You can only continually disrupt something for so long until society yearns for a system to be governed by.
Much like the Industrial Revolution, the invention of the automobile and the fall of Rome, there are times of violent upheaval and times of settling. What will happen once the fire settles and our new giants begin building our new pillars of society? Google it.
