Shea stadium being dismantled

The meaning of the Mets

They were, and always will be, happy losers.

My favorite part of Mets culture was the sign guy in the box seats at Shea Stadium in the 60s and 70s.

He always had a wisecrack, usually about how bad the Mets were, something true Mets fans revel in. (That’s why Casey Stengel the first Mets manager called them The Amazing Mets, not because they were great but because they were so bad.)

Anyway, the sign guy saved his best sign for the first pitch of the first inning of the first game of the season. It said: “Wait till next year!”

This, this one thing, sums up Mets culture in a single phrase.
