The EIDO Vault app, with its highly sophisticated architecture and vast digital medical library, is an unmatched solution within the National Health Service (NHS) medical system in the UK and in the realm of digitised informed consent worldwide. Failures in informed medical consent can be disastrous for both patients and clinicians. Also, paper-based consent systems are not only taxing to the environment, they are also insecure, laborious, less sharable, disorganised and frequently outdated or inaccurate. Digitisation is better in all respects.

Our brief from EIDO

Our client, EIDO Healthcare, has a 20-year track record in assisting health professionals to reduce the risk of litigation, improve doctor-patient relationships and increase patient satisfaction through the provision of up-to-date information on medical procedures in the UK and internationally. IO was asked to build the frontend and back-end of a highly secure, cloud-based native iOS app for iPad.

The app has to digitise and improve the patient-doctor informed consent process, securely store sensitive patient data in the cloud, and has to be tailored to suit the stringent data protection requirements of the NHS.

In architecting EIDO Vault, we needed to keep in mind three major considerations

We were building a critical system for both in the cloud and on premises (on the hospital network) that could never go down. Security and data privacy was crucial.

The software had to comply with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), the global industry standard for passing healthcare data between systems.

Information management is key

With EIDO Vault, the system shares all information with patients regarding their medical procedures, including benefits, alternatives and possible complications. All of this content is pulled from the EIDO XML database. The system also verifies the identities of patients or guardians, and ensures that clinicians log in via a secure PIN. The system requires signatures from patients/guardians and clinicians to prove that they have understood the information shared with them.

Configurable flows

Configurable flows are important as the system has to be adaptable to different situations, for instance, when the patient is a child or incapacitated, and a proxy or legal guardian has to give consent. The system also needs to accommodate repeat patients, the unique requirements of different hospitals and regional language variations to ensure accountability and transparency, and to accommodate future integrations. Patients can receive their documents via a patient portal or get it emailed to them.
