Startup Metrics for Pirates: AARRR!

5-step framework for product growth.

--

What is it?

Five-step model for creating a metrics framework for your business and customers, and how to apply it to your product and marketing efforts.

Why use it?

Measure customer behavior and use conversion metrics and web analytics to assist internet marketing and product management efforts.

How does it work?

The idea is to develop a model of your customer behavior. The basic concept is based on five types of measurements of user behavior:

  • A: Acquisition — where/what channels do users come from?
  • A: Activation — what percent have a “happy” initial experience?
  • R: Retention — do they come back and re-visit over time?
  • R: Referral — do they like it enough to tell their friends?
  • R: Revenue — can you monetize any of this behavior?
