Episode #11: *PSA* Cut off your fingers, now!

--

Quick! Grab the nearest sharpest object and hack-off your digits — We can’t take any chances here, people! First they faked our voices, then they faked our faces — NOW they are coming for our humble fingers. Is nothing safe?

Imagine a future where humans no longer have those weird skinny, bendy things poking out of their palms — because:

NYU and MSU students have coined the term “MasterPrint” to describe how partial fingerprint-based systems can be compromised by using strategically created fake prints.

Think of the damage to the Nail Salon industry. It would be wiped-out overnight. Well, perhaps they’d still get by with toes.

Yeah, all the attention would fall on to our toes, wouldn't it?? Phew. Okay, maybe this isn’t as bad as we first thought.

We promise, a more serious take on all this later. It will make sense.

First, more linkz…

Supes, is that you?

Just when you couldn’t hate Facebook anymore — this illustration imagines how they could go and, like, totally expose the secret identity of Kal-El? 👓

Who’s next, Santa?!?

‘Brilliant’, indeed.

Holland is over age

Remember in episode 9 when we told you about that Dutch gentleman who was trying to legally change his age?

Well, it didn’t work.

Never forget these faces

This is a fascinating application of face rec tech.

Obligatory negative Amazon Rekognition story

US Lawmakers are starting to circle around Amazon and its questionable algos.

And wow, TC out-did themselves with that pic of Bezos. 😬

Ironic story of the week goes to…

Seriously, this is like a Black Mirror plot.

“The police said they have upgraded their tech to avoid issues like this in the future. The real Dong, meanwhile, is embroiled in drama with an electric vehicle company.”

Lol.

Pointing fingers at Biometrics

Experian just released their sixth annual Data Breach Industry Forecast, which includes its top five data breach predictions for next year.

And, yup — Biometrics are #1.

“Attackers will zero in on biometric hacking and expose vulnerabilities in touch ID sensors, facial recognition and passcodes. Biometric data is considered the most secure method of authentication, but it can be stolen or altered, and sensors can be manipulated and spoofed or deteriorate with too much use.”

Which raises a sobering challenge for the biometrics industry: As the tech becomes more widely adopted; in turn shifting businesses towards automated identity solutions — the level of responsibility to protect the consumer and her data grows.

Experian goes on to recommend:

“Organizations need to ensure their biometric systems are secure in all layers. Biometric data should be encrypted and stored in secure servers. Privacy regulations may come into play in how biometric data is treated in the future, although now it is fairly unregulated. Until sensors, scanners, and other hardware are better able to detect anomalies, biometrics should be used as part of a multi-factor authentication system.”

This is sensible advice for today, and one we at Kairos embrace and champion. — especially in light of the story at the top about AI faking fingerprints*. Yet, it begs the question: Are we moving towards a future where AI is pitted against other AI?

Not to mention, raising the stakes of realizing a fully-AI identity solution in the near future— which, lets admit, is the Holy Grail of Identity Verification for many Product Managers working in Fin/Reg-Tech.
