The Principles of SSI

At IAMX, we work to ensure that our identity solution follows and employs the established principles of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). In 2016, Christopher Allen, a thought-leader within Web 3.0 and blockchain identity, identified ten principles of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) in an article published originally on CoinDesk.

👀 The ten principles of SSI as outlined by Allen, are as follows:

1. Existence — To have a self-sovereign identity, a person must not only exist but be able to exist in the digital world.

2. Control — The individual must be able to be in full ownership and control of their data. No other person or entity can claim rights to the person’s identity.

3. Access — Related to control, the individual must have full access to his or her identity and data, enjoying free access to their data without seeking the approval of a third party or intermediaries.

4. Transparency — Vendors who employ SSI in protocols, systems, and services, must ensure identity holders are able to view and understand how/when their data is utilized by the service.

5. Persistence — Identities must persist beyond the individual service with which the identity interacts. Ideally, identities will last from “birth until death” and all vendors and services interact with the same identity managed and controlled by the user.

6. Portability — Similarly, an individual must be able to transport their identity and credentials across all platforms and services.

7. Interoperability — SSI shouldn’t just serve a small set of niche services but should be interoperable across all platforms and services, enabling full portability of the identity.

8. Consent –Only the identity holder should be the one to give services and organizations permission to access their data.

9. Minimization — Regardless of the amount of data and information held within an identity, only the minimum necessary data required by the service should be accessed and seen by the service provider.

10. Protection — All identity holders should enjoy the maximum right to privacy and security. In addition to the default security offered by the blockchain, all service providers should employ top security standards with “privacy by design” safeguards, meaning that no third party should be able to see the user’s information without the permission of the user.

🙌Reading through these, you may find that there is some overlap between the principles. More importantly, note that all principles are written to serve the user first and foremost. SSI is inherently a user-centric model, which, we at IAMX not only adopt, we champion. In fact, in addition to adhering to the above principles, IAMX stands unique as an SSI provider by ensuring we exceed the highest security standards in the world, and by enabling the individual user to profit from the value and usage of their identity. We invite you to review our whitepaper and pitch deck — as well as our many articles — to learn more about how our SSI solution is the most user-centric in existence.🚀
