IB Psychology: Your Starting Point
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to teach psychology to students of varying levels — from beginners to postgraduates — and have found it to be a truly rewarding experience. In addition to my teaching experience, I have also worked in various capacities within the field of psychology, including counseling, retreats, mainstream and online media outlets, publications, research, and discussions. I am deeply passionate about psychology and would be delighted to share my knowledge and experience with others. I have had the privilege of studying psychology at university without any prior knowledge, which has provided me with a unique perspective on the subject.
IB Psychology is a significant subject among the six subjects undertaken by IB Diploma students for two years. Students have the option to take it at either higher or standard levels (HL or SL), depending on their preferences and academic goals. The subject covers three essential approaches to understanding human behavior, namely, biological, cognitive, and sociocultural approaches. Students are exposed to specific units that explore different human behaviors, with in-depth discussions on how these approaches facilitate those behaviors. This period of two years covers both theoretical and practical applications of psychological research, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of human behavior.
I have come to greatly appreciate the distinctive nature of this field of study and the profound effect it has on people's lives. It has been an invaluable tool for me in navigating through various challenges, living harmoniously with others, managing a range of responsibilities, fostering and nurturing relationships, earning trust, encouraging positive behavior, attracting opportunities, mitigating risks, and minimizing negative impacts.
Acquiring a degree, or a certificate in psychology could potentially offer one a distinct advantage by providing them with valuable insights and knowledge to successfully navigate complex situations. Throughout my upbringing, I encountered numerous discussions about the importance of psychology in various professions where additional skills are essential to address challenging situations. These discussions gradually sparked my interest in this field of specialization.
There are various scenarios where psychological interventions can be beneficial. Individuals may seek the expertise of a psychologist when faced with challenges such as medical treatments that are not yielding expected results, learning difficulties, behavioral or personality issues, weakened emotional connections in relationships, addiction, and times of loss and mourning. In addition, psychologists can provide valuable support when preparing for important life events such as marriage, job interviews, career planning, business ventures, and implementing changes at home or work. It is important to recognize that seeking psychological help is a personal choice, and there is no shame or stigma attached to it.
There are a range of perspectives and opinions regarding the complexity and depth of psychological content, particularly about the theories and research studies that support them. The insights gained from psychology are the result of extensive hard work, perseverance, and dedication. As with any valuable skill or product, mastering psychology requires a considerable amount of time and effort. To access the benefits of psychology, one must be prepared, consistent, patient, and dedicated. However, with the right knowledge and understanding, psychology can become a valuable skill that can benefit both you and your loved ones. Above all else, it provides a unique perspective that allows you to see things from multiple angles.
Psychology is a field of study that offers tremendous benefits to diverse professions ranging from military, medicine, business, law, design, mechanics, religious studies, traditional practices, and many more. It is worth noting that one can choose to study psychology as a complementary major to other fields of study, and there is no requirement to have psychology scores on one's transcript. The availability of content, materials, and resources online and in libraries has made it possible for everyone to learn about psychology regardless of their background. Furthermore, living with people provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable insights into human behavior.
