I’ve been crunching the numbers for my second annual Spanish Cost of Living Breakdown (update coming soon!) with a detailed look at every euro my wife and I spent living in Spain in 2024.

This breakdown includes everything from our rent and utilities to groceries, phone bills, and every cup of coffee, glass of wine, and bite of jamón we enjoyed this past year.

But a few things are missing from my list. And not because I forgot to track those expenses.

Living in Spain has changed how we spend our money in important ways.

And I want to show how these new blank spots in our budget make life in Spain not just more affordable, but so much more enjoyable.

And why we’ll never spend money like we used to in the US.

We don’t have any monthly subscriptions

Subscription “services” in the US have gotten out of control.

According to some studies, the average American spends $300 a month on subscriptions for music and streaming services, meal delivery boxes, and a million other “lifestyle” subscriptions.
