Sophie Derrick Uses her Body As Canvas In Striking Self-Portraits

Sophie Derrick is a young British artist. She uses photography, the act of painting and the substance of paint to create startling images where the body is both the object and subject in the work. In doing so she questions the traditional concept of painting and portraiture and the barriers between painting and photography.
Derrick uses the most intimate of canvases to display her art: her own body. Blurring the lines between photography and painting, Derrick achieves a multi-layered portrait by painting directly on her skin, photographing the results, then painting over the photograph again. The rich impasto and bright bold colors add amazing depth, and Derrick manages to convey feelings of vulnerability and power in each canvas despite the thick layers of paint.
