Sixteen weeks ago, we started on a journey and now we have reached the destination. It’s taken some time to sink in, but our IBM Corporate Service Corps mission is complete. We climbed a mountain that seemed quite overwhelming at the outset of the journey. And not only did we climb, but our team was remarkable in supporting one another each step of the way. At no time was anyone abandoned — no man was left behind!

That does not mean that the climb was easy, or always upward. As with any team, at least those that excel and reach great heights, individuals coalesce and learn a new dynamic — one where the team is much greater than the sum of the individuals. Each team member has unique strengths, and learning to utilize the strengths of others in a productive fashion is as much an art as science.

Four weeks ago, we met our client, the Thailand Department of Medical Services (DMS). They have been an awesome and engaging client to work with. Most weeks have consisted of long work weeks (6 days/week) and long work days (10–14 hours/day).

We spent much time together deep diving into the Thailand healthcare landscape and the DMS institutions, learning much about their strengths, pain points, challenges, and opportunities to improve.

Before and after learning about the healthcare landscape, our team spent much time researching world-wide best-of-breed healthcare practices in developed and developing countries. We then applied our knowledge, vocational skills, and technical expertise to make some key recommendations to our client with the goal of assisting in their journey from a hospital-based healthcare system to a personal-based healthcare system.

(See part 2 for the continuation of the journey!)
