IBM Watson Studio Desktop enables data science and AI teams to refine data, build models and deploy using data on the desktop. It provides anytime, anywhere access to your projects, online or off. You can build models visually using the drag-and-drop capabilities of SPSS Modeler, or leverage open source tools like Jupyter Notebooks. Plus, there are dozens of options for connecting to data.

Starting September 30, Watson Studio Desktop will also include text analytics, new charting capabilities, and other new features. What’s more, IBM is adding a new product to the Watson Studio family, the Watson Machine Learning Server.

Text Analytics out of the box

Watson Studio Desktop now includes text analytics nodes with built-in, industry-leading dictionaries. This is critical because up to 80 percent of today’s data is unstructured, and without text analytics, it’s easy to miss the insights hidden in that data.

The new text analytics capabilities enable users to tap into unstructured data and generate insights in minutes without having to code or use a separate tool. New features include:

  • Simple user interface with built-in dictionaries — just bring your data
  • Interactive workbench includes categories, conceptions, and text link analysis
  • Build a categorization model to automatically organize fresh datasets — even take different actions based on detected categories
  • Includes built-in support for English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, and Portuguese
  • Backwards compatible with all SPSS Modeler text analysis streams

New Interactive Charting

As Figure 1 shows, Watson Studio Desktop can now generate word clouds, surfacing new insights from text. This is one of the many chart capabilities provided by our new graphics engine. The Charts node generates insights faster and more interactively, providing more flexibility in presenting information:

  • Find the perfect chart for your data instantly with the new smart chart recommender
  • View your chart as you build it to complete your project faster
  • Quickly and interactively build multiple charts at once
  • Easily export your charts for a professional, modern presentations

More new features boost performance

Customers who are familiar with SPSS Modeler will love this release, because it brings the SQL Pushback capability in SPSS Modeler to Watson Studio Desktop. This feature can dramatically enhance performance by pushing back many operations to be performed in the database rather than on the client or server computer, maximizing compute efficiency.

This release also includes a new ability to view the generated SQL statements, as well as an ultra-fast preview from any node, parameter definitions for streams and supernodes, Jython scripting, and a migration assistant to import any SPSS Modeler stream.

Deploy any model with Watson Machine Learning Server

We are also introducing the Watson Machine Learning Server, a new addition to the Watson Studio family. Watson Machine Learning Server works with Watson Studio Desktop 1.0 (a new perpetual license version of Watson Studio Desktop available with SPSS Modeler Gold) to deliver deployment and powerful compute capabilities.

After connecting to Watson Studio Desktop 1.0, Watson Machine Learning Server:

  • Enables model deployment from SPSS Modeler or Python 3 Jupyter Notebooks including AI/ML models
  • Offloads intensive compute workloads from SPSS Modeler
  • Installs easily as it is packaged as a lightweight single-node server

Watson Machine Learning Server increases compute and storage capacities beyond individual workstation specs. It enhances collaboration by serving as a data science repository and framework for model operations.

It also includes IBM SPSS Modeler Server to seamlessly scale SPSS Modeler model building. And it features the same API and user interface as Watson Machine Learning Local and Cloud editions, simplifying the creation and management of models.

New pricing for Watson Studio Desktop Subscription

Since Watson Studio Desktop Subscription launched in December of 2018, it has seen significant adoption. Our product team has listened closely to users, and we added many of the features they have requested most.

With the additional capabilities planned for release later this month, we are announcing the end of our special introductory pricing period. As of October 15, the price will return to the original $499/month. There’s still time, however, to lock-in the discounted pricing over the term of your agreement, so subscribe today!
