Roseate Spoonbills

A Poem about Seeing

The pink ones that seem
by their peculiar silhouettes
to fly backward
are spoonbills —
and when the rising sun
ignites their roseate wings
in a flash of fiery brilliance,
I feel
as if
I’ve never seen them before.
