We are very excited to announce that Eperoto is now part of the Icebreaker family! 🎉

Eperoto is a Swedish legaltech company that helps legal professionals and parties manage uncertainty and assess the rational course of action in legal disputes. Founded early 2020 by a strong team of young engineers and legal professionals, Eperoto aims to change the way businesses, organisations and individuals evaluate and manage legal disputes.

When there is a legal dispute, it is often extremely difficult for those involved to figure out what the rational course of action should be. There is uncertainty around the trial results, actual damages, and whether the counterparty will go bankrupt and so forth. If there are more than one claim, the number of possible outcomes multiplies. In order to do an analysis of all this, one typically needs to build a complex custom model unique to the dispute, input various probabilities and values to get the value of the claim and thus the price you should settle at. The problem is that this is extremely difficult and complex for most legal professionals; calculating expected value is outside of the expertise for most lawyers. Moreover, even for the qualified and motivated it is highly time-consuming with the currently available spreadsheet-based tools.

Eperoto provides a tool that does the math for legal professionals in seconds — it removes the need to map the interlocking complexity of claims processes and the thousands of permutations involved. The team behind Eperoto is a strong mix of domain knowledge and technical expertise. Founder and CEO Olof Heggemann has a professional background from the Swedish public court system and experience in banking and law firms. Seeing and experiencing the struggles and miscalculations in courtrooms is what led Heggemann to found Eperoto.

“I was frustrated by the destruction of capital that disputes entail. Disputes are an inevitable part of commercial relationships. However, how the disputes are handled is not good. It is common that parties and agents talk past each other and make decisions on a substandard basis. Had the parties done a real analysis before, enormous resources and emotions could be saved,” Heggemann says in an interview by Affärsvärlden.

Eperoto’s core team also includes Software Architect Johan Thelin, CTO Manos Karystinos and CDO Dimitrios Zarkadas. Thelin has a strong experience in building complex products, most recently working on the infotainment system for the new Mercedes E-Class. Both Karystinos and Zarkadas are formally trained engineers and thus contribute to the computational aspects of Eperoto’s engine as well as the design of the software.

When we at Icebreaker started speaking to Eperoto, we were impressed by how well they understood and how clearly they articulated the problems with the status quo in legal decision making. Even as newcomers to this world, we could instantly see the utility of the tool that they are building and — from the traction that they have had so far with leading legal practices — so do their customers. We are excited to continue backing the Eperoto team on their journey!

Eperoto’s pre-seed round was closed alongside Jens Lapidus and Mårten Schultz as angel investors.
