swiping fatigue: what it is & four tips to get past it

Are you on a dating app that allows you to swipe endlessly? While it’s great to have options, it can also be exhausting. The majority of people you come across might be great IRL, but sometimes their profiles straight up suck.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty stingy with my right swipes. But for the guys that I do mutually match with, it can be grueling to repeatedly go through the process of getting to know someone (although, sometimes there is an easy method to this madness).

If you’re like me and have hit a wall, then you, my friend are experiencing Swiping Fatigue.

Let me be clear, this doesn’t mean you’ve given up on dating. You just need to temporarily remove yourself from the swiping world, and that’s perfectly fine!

So if you’re feeling down in the dumps about dating and just can’t be bothered to swipe one way or another, read on.

#1 Take a break from dating!

First and foremost, take some time off. It’s your life; you’re allowed to call the shots.

If you’re feeling like you need to take a break from dating apps — do it! Turn off those notifications for a week or two, you’ll feel refreshed in no time.

#2 Honesty is the best policy

I guarantee you, at least a few of the people you’ve spoken to on a dating app have felt the same way. Just be honest!

If you’re going off the grid for a bit, let them know. As I’ve said so many times before — don’t be the person who ghosts. It just isn’t cool and you’re better than that.

#3 Refocus your attention

While you detox from the dating world, take some time to focus on yourself. Sign up for a class, spend some time with a friend you haven’t seen in a while or check off something on your bucket list.

By changing up your normal routine you’ll add excitement back into your life and that’ll boost your dating game as a side effect.

#4 Try a new app

While swiping apps may be popular, 500 characters really don’t give you much to work with.

Mix it up! Look for a dating app that allows you to learn more about someone. This will ensure you’re actually interested in the person, and you won’t be so quick to say no to a match for a silly reason (ie. looking bad in one of their pictures). If you’re in the Boston area, why not give Icebrkr a try?

When you finally feel like you’re ready to hop back into the ring, I promise you, you’ll be ready. The excitement of meeting new people will be back and who knows, maybe you’ll have a fun story or a new hobby to share.
