Methods of training your employees

Every company wants its employees to work with absolute efficiency. But is it that simple? No, that’s the right answer. Because the changes in the environment are so rapid that it is almost impossible to work with the same skills.

It creates the concept of improving the skills and expertise of workers. In other words, the changing environment creates a demand for change and the development of skills or training of workers.

In this article, we will look at the different training methods under two main topics: Training on the job and training off the job.

These different methods can be broadly classified as:

1. On-The-Job Training: Some of the training methods are new, while others represent an improvement over traditional methods. These training techniques are the means by which employees acquire skills and knowledge.

2. Off the job training: Training methods used outside the workplace can be referred to as off-the-job training.

The different training methods are as follows:

1. Training in the vestibules:

Here, training takes place outside the workplace but uses all the equipment, materials, and methods similar to those actually used in the performance of the work. This method simulates the actual working conditions in the classroom. In addition to the production area itself, there is a special room equipped with a facility similar to the actual workplace.

The advantages of this method are training processes that take place without interrupting the current operation. Trainees are not under pressure if they expect to produce while learning.

The disadvantage is that the cost of this method is high. In addition, it will not be possible to transfer the actual pressure to which an employee is exposed while working in this artificially created environment.

2. Role-playing games:

It is defined as a method of human interaction that involves realistic behavior in imaginary situations. This method consists in creating a realistic situation in which participants assume and play the role of a particular personality in the situation.

This method includes action, during, and after training. The main objective of this method is the development of interpersonal relationships and thus promotes better interpersonal interaction and attitude changes.

3. Lecture method

This is a direct teaching method that involves an oral presentation of information by a teacher to a wide audience. The instructor organizes the material and gives it to a group of students in the form of conversations. This method can be used effectively thanks to the motivation and interest of the students.

However, if this method is used in combination with other training methods, it can be very effective.

4. A conference or group discussions:

In this training method, a group of people freely discusses and poses ideas, shares and examines information or ideas, tests and evaluates them, and then draws conclusions on various aspects that contribute to improved work performance.

The main advantage of this method is that all participants are involved and there is mutual communication, but the success of this method depends on the leadership qualities of the person leading the group.

5 Programmed Instruction:

In this training method, there is no intervention of the trainer. The material to be learned is presented in a series of planned sequential units. After reading each part, the learner must answer a question on this subject, for which he receives feedback in the form of correct answers.

The advantages of PI are — it is self-directed, this method offers many opportunities for practice because the learning material is structured and autonomous.

There are some limitations to this method. They are, although there is room for learning by doing, the scope of learning offered by other methods is much greater. This method is expensive and time-consuming.

6. Audio visualizations:

Audiovisual training methods are now widely used. This method uses slides, overhead projectors, televisions, videotapes, tapes, and films. The main advantage of this method is that the quality of the presentation remains the same for all training groups.

In addition, the effect is better than with other methods such as conferences, seminars. However, this is a one-way communication, so there is no doubt as to the clarification for participants. Since the presentations are standardized, it is not possible to take into account the specific needs of the audience concerned.

7 On-the-job training:

Here, the training is done on-site and in contact with the workplace. The trainer, who is an experienced employee, shows the work, how the different tasks are performed. This method is often used in industrial training, where workers actually work on the machine.

The advantages of this training method are: It is cheaper; the effectiveness of the training is very high because it involves a real demonstration and the trainees actually experience the work to be done. The disadvantage is that the training process, as it takes place in the workplace, on the machines, interferes with the proper functioning of production.

8 Simulation:

In this training method, equipment or techniques from actual use are duplicated to create a realistic decision-making environment. The advantage of this training method is that they are informed of the outcome of the students’ decisions with an explanation of what would have happened if they had actually been taken at the workplace. This avoids costly mistakes. But this method is very expensive.
