On May 23rd, 2015, a friend and me took our flight from Helsinki to Oslo, where we would get the flight to Reykjavik. The travel time was long, but since we were heading east, we were going back in time, sort of.

Taking off in Oslo’s Gardermoen Airport

We arrived at Keflavik Airport at 11 in the morning, and after buy a SIM card and getting the car we rented, we were set to go. We started our trip with a fast pass-by in Reykjavik, and then headed north in the direction of Glymur, the second tallest waterfall in Iceland.

To reach Glymur you need to walk a path, crossing small rivers and swamp-like areas. Getting your boots wet in the cold weather of Iceland is not what you really want, so it takes a while to reach the waterfalls that are part of the canyon in which Glymur is located. We didn’t really got to see the whole waterfall because the trail was a little bit too hard for beginners like us, but the view from the river was pretty nice to start.

After Glymur we drove for a while, heading north again, to reach the famous Kirkjufell, near the town of Grundarfjördur. The mountain is probably one of the most photographed spots of Iceland, especially if you consider the features outside of the golden circle. In the same area you have some nice waterfalls streaming from the fjords, something that you’ll see constantly in Iceland.

After Kirkjufell we headed to Olafsvik, another city in the area. We were planning to sleep in the car there. But it was still pretty early and bright, at 9pm and we were pretty excited. So we decided to make a big change in our plans and extend our roadtrip to one of the least visited places in Iceland, but also one of the prettiest: the Western Fjords. What we didn’t know was that the road, even though it was one of the major ones, was really bad. Our Chevrolet Spark suffered to get through the rocks and potholes of the dirty road, and we had to drive excruciatingly slow. We decided to sleep in Búðardalur, just before the Western Fjords so we could rest and be up early, for our trip was only beginning.
