The Council of Europe released several NGO awards in June 2022 to safeguard and advance women’s and girls’ rights, each one specifically designed to address the context of armed conflict and the unique vulnerabilities of women and girls.

La Strada-Ukraine will carry out initiatives to strengthen the response to violence against women in armed conflict by analyzing the information gathered from hotlines and initiatives conducted across Ukraine. In addition, the project will educate the public on how to proceed if the Istanbul Convention is ratified, the rights of victims, and the services offered during the war. It will also teach police, prosecutors, and judges to respond to violence against women during warfare.

Activities carried out as part of the public movement “Faith, Hope, Love” are intended to increase public awareness and knowledge of domestic abuse reporting procedures, human trafficking prevention measures, and aid programs in the Odesa region and border regions. For internally displaced people, the project also plans social, psychological, and legal help.

The Ukrainian Women Lawyers Association “JurFem” will promote awareness of the Istanbul Convention’s implementation as well as the problems of domestic violence and violence against women in Ukraine. The award will enable JurFem to continue its research on the incidence of wartime violence against women in Ukraine and the reactions of the legal and judicial systems.

By improving the knowledge and abilities of psychologists, volunteers, and shelter staff in identifying and providing assistance for women and children on the move, as well as by ensuring prevention and effective response to domestic violence in IDP shelters, the Center “Women’s Perspectives” in Lviv will carry out activities to improve access to justice and services for internally displaced victims of domestic violence

These NGO Grants are offered as part of the “Combating Violence Against Women in Ukraine (COVAW)” project, which is supported by the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine 2018–2022. They are intended to defend and advance women’s human rights amid armed conflict.
