How to insert an icon in Microsoft Word

Using icons in Microsoft Word and Powerpoint is a great alternative to just have text or using generic stock photos.

When using icons in Word you should be aware of which format you are using. Using the vector formats, SVG or AI will not work. PNG is the best solution, but this is not a vector format, so you should make sure the icons are in a large enough resolution to not look grained when the document is printed.

First go to Iconfinder and search for the image you need.

Click on an icon you like. At the top of the page, you can choose the largest size which is often 512 px.

Once the size has been changed, you can either choose to click the download button labeled PNG (pronounced “ping”) or simply drag the icon into Word. If you choose to download the icon, the icon can be found in your default download folder. Drag the icon to Word.

The icon will be quite large in Word. To scale download the icon, just click it and drag the handles in the bottom left corner.

To make text wrap nicely around the icon, you can right-click and click Format Picture. From the Layout section, you can select Square and alignment e.g. Right.

The text will now wrap nicely around the icon.

Recoloring icons

Besides using icons as illustrations in your document or presentation, you might also want to change the color of the icons.

We wrote a short and very useful guide on how to change the color of your icons in Microsoft PowerPoint, which also applies to Microsoft Word.
