With more icons come greater responsibilities
Iconfinder reached 3 million icons 🎉
We are ecstatic to announce that we’ve just counted the three millionth icon on our marketplace. That’s more than one icon per every single person living in Chicago. Currently, around 80,000 new icons are added to Iconfinder every single month.
What does this mean to us and our community?
Besides being a mind-blowing number, 3 million demonstrates trust that our icon designer community has in us. We want to thank each and every one of them for not only contributing their artwork, but also staying close to us on a day-to-day basis — providing feedback, alerting about issues, and helping spread the good news.
On the surface, 3 million icons is an exciting milestone for our little team. Yet on a deeper level, this means we should think even harder of how to handle this massive amount of content.
How can we make the search more intuitive and accessible? What should be the criteria for an icon to appear at the top of the search results? How should we deal with the outdated content that might no longer be relevant to our customers? How should we approach new submissions? And how can we make sure that newly submitted outstanding icons don’t get lost in the ocean of others?
These and similar questions are now more relevant to us than ever. We carry big responsibilities, both for our customers, and our 2,915 icon designers.
Focus on the meaningful content
Within the past year, we increased the efforts allocated to the content handling process. We still review every single icon set manually to ensure high-quality, but we’ve become more organized in our approach. We are also more strict about what comes through. If you’re interested, here you can find our criteria for approving icons.
Probably one of the most rewarding parts was becoming more systematic in leveraging the search data to educate our contributors about the demand patterns. Our quarterly icon designer reports help new and existing designers focus their work on themes and styles that customers are searching for.
The issues of diversity and inclusiveness in design are still very noticeable, and icon market is not an exception. We examine this matter in more detail in our recent blog post about the lack of diversity in icon design. In there as well as in the designer report, we encourage our contributors to challenge common stereotypes and preconceptions when creating icons.
It was beyond exciting to count the first millions, but we are not chasing that in the coming year. Instead, we would like to put more focus on stepping up the usability of the platform and making it accessible to wider audiences. The user survey we ran last year gave some great insights on what can (and should) be changed or improved, and we are ready to jump on it!
We want to thank everyone who stayed with us from the beginning, as well as all the newbies. Here’s to the new exciting year!
