How to Disguise the Bitter Taste of Coffee?

Coffee is a drink that many people like because of its fragrant aroma and refreshing effect. However, not everyone can enjoy the bitter taste of coffee, especially if the brewed coffee is too strong or thick. The bitter taste of coffee can reduce the enjoyment and benefits of drinking coffee for the body.

Then, how do you disguise the bitter taste of coffee without losing its distinctive taste? Here are some tips you can try:

1. Reduce the brewing time. The bitter taste of coffee mostly comes from the process of extracting caffeine and other substances from the coffee beans into the hot water. The longer you brew coffee, the more of these substances will dissolve and the more bitter it will taste. Therefore, try to brew coffee in a shorter time, for example 3–4 minutes for the pour over method or 1–2 minutes for the espresso method.

2. Pay attention to the temperature of the water for brewing coffee. Water that is too boiling can also make coffee more bitter because it will ripen the coffee beans and release unwanted substances. The ideal water temperature for brewing coffee is around 93 degrees Celsius, not 100 degrees Celsius. You can use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the water or wait about 30 seconds after the water boils before pouring it into your coffee.

3. Do not choose coffee beans that are ground too fine. The size of the coffee bean grind also affects the bitter taste of coffee. The finer the coffee beans are ground, the more easily the substances in them dissolve into the water and the more bitter the taste. So, if you don’t like the bitter taste, don’t buy or grind the coffee beans too finely. Choose the grind size according to the brewing method you are using, for example medium size for pour over or coarse size for French press.

4. Add natural ingredients that can neutralize the bitter taste. There are several natural ingredients that you can add to your coffee to disguise the bitter taste without changing the original taste. Some examples are:

- Salt. Salt suppresses the tongue’s receptors which are responsible for bitter tastes and naturally enhances sweetness. You just need to add a pinch or two of salt to your coffee and mix well.

- Dates. Dates are a sweet and delicious fruit that can be a natural sweetener for coffee. The sweet taste of dates can disguise the bitter taste of coffee and give a different taste sensation. You can chop the dates into small pieces and put them in your coffee cup or grind them and mix them with a little hot water before pouring them into your coffee.

- Creamy sauce, cheese, olive oil or other fatty ingredients. Fat naturally masks the bitter taste and makes it more pleasant and creamy. You can add cream sauce, grated cheese, olive oil, or other fatty ingredients to your coffee according to your taste.

With the tips above, you can enjoy coffee without having to worry about the bitter taste. Good luck!
