Lateral idea generation
or having fun to work
Lateral thinking is the opposite way that we usually use to gener- ate ideas and thoughts. Rather than following logical steps, mak- ing large use of methods and great “scientific processes” this way of thinking promotes the use of serendipity, provocation, intui- tion and even game. It’s this last point that I really appreciate in this method.
Giving fun to work:
the pattern addition method

One good example that shows that you can really have fun with the lateral idea generation is the pattern addition method. You sim- ply add two pattern of a same — or even completely different — group and see what happens. This allows you to create funny situations which then help you go beyond your presuppositions.
When this addition works
Sometimes you’re lucky enough to create pattern additions which help you directly. When this happens the fun you had brings a tangible result which gives a new input for your work. Pattern addition usually works really well for design domain like illustra- tion or storytelling, because this method creates strong and bold visual ideas.
When this addition fails
If you’re domain of design isn’t illustration or storytelling you could think that the pattern addition method fails. In fact, it doesn’t give a direct match which helps you go further. Because, maybe, you’re not designing images but more designing “real” problems. It’s here that the fun part of the pattern addition method comes back to help you. The fact that you are enjoying the idea genera- tion brings two simple things : — you begin to be happy ; — you think the problem outside of the box. Even if you haven’t an idea that is directly useful, the simple facts of feeling happy, having fun, and going out of your standard ide- as are bringing you to work with a nice little smile and a new motivation.
Therefore I think that the pattern addition method taken from lateral thinking is a good addition to standard and processing thinking. It can bring new ideas or put you out of your thinking box or even make you just feel happy.
