Dancing in the Moonlight

I think Dancer by Joan Miro is the perfect example of the struggle of good versus evil, or light versus darkness. I think the cool background sends a constant feeling of serenity for the viewer. It really makes you think the more that you stare at it.

The yin and yang represents the battle of light versus dark, but also it represents a battle. I think this is why Miro chose to attach a heart to a string connecting it to the yin and yang symbol hanging above.

Furthermore, the spider hanging at the bottom of the heart represents the insects who attempt to bring you back down to earth. The heart is floating, it knows where it wants to be, yet the spider seemingly keeps trying to bring it back down to earth.

I think this painting shows a struggle that we each can find in ourselves. It is the struggle to be grounded, yet have dreams; to be hopeful, yet rooted; to be competitive, yet fair; to be loving, yet cautious of what/who to love. This painting teaches us to “dance” with all of these life lessons to learn. It teaches to find the balance in life.
