Recently I ate at a In-&-Out Burger for the first time. People from the West Coast, specifically California, have always bragged about the dankness of In-&-Out. After eating there, I’m still left to wonder why? The quality of the meal was no better than any other fast food burger joint. The patties are on generic buns nearly identical to other cheap fast food. McDonald’s dollar menu provides burgers that are cheaper and more filling than In-&-Out’s signature “Double Double”. Fans of In-&-Out boast about how cheap the burger is. The “Double, Double” was $3.50, Double cheeseburgers are sold at Wendy’s for $1, a restaurant that also highlights in their marketing about their burger meat never being frozen.

While the food is overhyped, the atmosphere is not. The layout of the restaurant to the uniforms the employees wore all encouraged a nostalgic feeling for the 1950s. The white paper hats, the simplicity of their menu with the tables chairs and booths all contributing to a timeless diner motif. For some, the atmosphere sells the restaurant more than their food has. In-&-Out burger simulates, or perhaps never lost, the old 1950s diners feel that were made famous by the entertainment industry.
