A.O. Scott’s Better Living Through Criticism was an interesting read…when I wasn’t groaning. I don’t mean in an it-was-so-bad-burn-it kind of way, but…hold on, let me explain.

People say not to judge a book by its cover but between you and me, sometimes that’s what I do. As an avid book reader, I have my preferences and with it, I can usually tell what I’ll be in for and if I’ll like it.

Critics have the bad rap of being the person who shit on other people’s hard work. So when I discovered the book was a critic advising how to critic I was less than thrilled, but being a firm believer of reading the first paragraph before casting it aside, I read through unbias. Thank you, Mrs. Chamberlin! (My elementary school librarian.)

As far as advice goes, it’s fair. Hell, I agree with most of what he said but maybe it’s the slightly peeved student in me that is ticked because his topic was a bush and he kept beating around it. Going on about the history of the bush, the meaning of the bush, and then finally comes back to continue the story but you forgot what he was talking about.

Get to the point already, man.

(See what I did at the beginning? Made you wait.)
