International Allyship Day on August 8th is a day dedicated to celebrating and promoting the power of allyship across the globe. On this special day, we come together to recognize the importance of standing up for one another, fostering inclusivity, and building bridges of support and understanding.

Allyship is key to creating inclusive workplace cultures, and it has the potential to deliver meaningful impacts to people from marginalized backgrounds. Research has shown that allyship can produce profound effects for members of marginalized groups. These effects can include better career outcomes and improved wellbeing.

Today is a good day to commit (or recommit) to your own individual allyship practice. Here are a few ideas for consideration:

  • Take some time to reflect on your own biases and assumptions and create a plan to work on them
  • Think about your own privilege and power and ways you might use them to create a more inclusive workplace
  • Educate yourself about the communities you want to support–read books and articles, watch films or video, have respectful conversations and do more listening than talking (but don’t expect others to educate you)
  • Join an allyship bookclub or discussion group
  • Take an online allyship course
  • Practice speaking up in episodes of discrimination, so you’re prepared when you need to
  • Learn and embrace inclusive language
  • Create genuine friendships with people who have different identities from you.

We encourage everyone to join in celebrating International Allyship Day and to use it as a time to grow and build your own allyship practice.
