Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting with George Aye of Greater Good Studio. Among the many things he shared with me was his joy in a project he created called Portraits of Color.

It’s a simple concept with the potential for profound impact. On a practical level, young professionals of color are often at a disadvantage in applying for jobs. A high-quality headshot is one small boost in their favor. It’s an asset in the quest to achieve representation and equity in the workplace.

“The participant saw themselves within seconds — and it’s in that moment where they saw themselves looking powerful and beautiful.” — George Aye

On a more profound level though, this project gives participants visual evidence of themselves in a professional light and maybe even a chance to see their own beauty. There is a ripple effect too. When these headshots show up in the world, other young professionals of color can more easily find people who look like them, further reducing the barriers to entry for future professionals of color.

I’m excited to be bringing Portraits of Color to Kansas City. With the help of Tico Productions and James Bridgeford, we’ll be holding our first portrait session on September 26th, 2019.

If you know a young professional of color who would like a free, high-quality headshot, please share this link with them. We can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to serve everyone, but we will fit in everyone we possibly can.

And stay tuned for more updates on Portraits of Color KC after the shoot.
