Antibiotic resistance is rising to dangerously high levels in all parts of the world and threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases. “Antibiotic resistance is a global crisis that we cannot ignore,” says Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. “If we don’t tackle this threat with strong, coordinated action, antimicrobial resistance will take us back to a time when people feared common infections and risked their lives from minor surgery.”

Adverse effects from antibiotics are very common, occurring up to 20% of the time in hospitalised patients. The possibility of adverse effects occurring from antibiotics must be factored in every time doctors prescribe them. Yes, they save lives in some cases, but the complication rate is not trivial.

How can we prevent mass antibiotic resistance?

Micreos develops the world’s first targeted antibacterial products, set to replace antibiotics. For the first time, we can kill only the unwanted bacteria — including antibiotic resistant strains — while leaving the beneficial bacteria intact. In addition, research shows that the use of endolysins does not induce resistance. This unlocks a completely new approach to dealing with the bacteria around us — also enabling long-term use when it is needed and preserving the important biodiversity on our skin and in our gut.

With an inspiring event in the Knights’ Hall in The Hague on 24 April, we kicked off the joint development of shared purposes to take on global challenges. Do you think that the solution of Micreos can actively contribute to our shared purpose of creating intelligent medicine, that help beat antibiotics resistance and fight the superbug?

Then let us know how we can try to help Micreos reach that goal and if you can be a part of that development. Share this post and your thoughts using the hashtag #IdeasfromEU, tweet us or visit our website: ideasfrom.eu
