Food waste is an important issue when it comes to global food security and good environmental governance, leading to environmental, economic and social impacts. Across Europe, approximately 88 million tonnes of food is wasted every year.

All components in the food chain have a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste, says EU Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis. From those who produce and process foods (farmers, food manufacturers and processors) to those who make foods available for consumption (hospitality sector, retailers) and ultimately consumers themselves.

What can we do to help reducing waste of food?

Too Good To Go is a smartphone application that helps restaurants and food sellers sell their surplus food instead of wasting it, thereby fighting food waste. Our mission is to reduce food waste worldwide, and our vision is to create a world where food produced is food consumed. In 2017 alone, the Too Good To Go community saved over 2 million meals from being wasted.

With an inspiring event in the Knights’ Hall in The Hague on 24 April, we kicked off the joint development of shared purposes to take on global challenges. Do you think that the solution of Too Good to Go can actively contribute to our shared purpose of eliminating food wastage and help reduces hunger?

Then let us know how we can try to help Too Good to Go reach that goal and if you can be a part of that development. Share this post and your thoughts using the hashtag #IdeasfromEU, tweet us or visit our website: ideasfrom.eu
