Fantasy Device — Susan Shi

Through the first quick interview, my partner Ruiyang told me that she thought fantasy device is something like /transparent dashboard/, maybe our phones will completely disappear in the future because of the /transparent dashboard/ techs.
And I asked about some detailed dreams in her mind. It came out that she thinks that fantasy devices have the responsibility to make people’s lives easier and more convenient. But actually, Ruiyang’s fantasy device isn’t a clear problem-solved orientation.
So, I came up that we can start from the functions of your product then go to the style/feature. After a dig deeper, I realized the most important function for Ruiyang’s dreamed device is /gesture remote control/. Besides, according to Ruiyang, this device may have the feature of : 1. only belongs to Ruiyang and others can’t access it 2. can be implanted in the body 3. with nano size. 4. environment-friendly.
And the reason why Ruiyang’s device needs to be unique to herself is that her worries about privacy problems and government centralized control.
Then, we came to the third part of this ideation project. The insights I conceived from Ruiyang’s thought are that our designer sometimes always focus on designing sth for the public, reaching the accessibility for all kind of people, but for some reasons and sometimes, users need their unique product to avoid being controlled by all techs that are currently being used widely. Privacy and personalization should also be the main points when we start to design a product.
Before I started to create 3–5 images to meet Ruiyang’s needs, I defined her problem like this: Ruiyang needs a way to live more easily and safely. Unexpectedly, in his/her world, there’re big privacy problems. For example, when she orders foods on an app, it indeed makes her life easier, but on the other side, the app steals her personal information to sell maybe. After the primary research, my first ideation sketch for Ruiyang’s fantasy device came up.
It has the basic function according to Ruiyang’s thoughts, like body implanting, remote control , etc. But Ruiyang thinks the glass and phone is too big and very clumsy and can be seen by everyone. And we both thought these three ideas were too normal with no sparkles. So I advanced them at next time.
Then, it became like this! A remote control device on the nail! It’s a similar concept from one of my past work. With the electric devices on the nails, users can call/shoot by gestures and without taking out electronic devices. I think this device has more potential abilities. It is unique for users and so private and personalized. Users can even design their own nail style. I asked for Ruiyang’s reflection. She said this idea can meet her needs better, it has faster way to do tasks remote-controlled and is very small and tiny to caryy out. Besides, she thought the sound function can be added to avoid them being lost.
Now, I think it can be recycled, maybe made by seaweed or corn starch. We both think this product can have many different potentials and we are glad to discuss more.
It’s the conclusion of my partner’s fantasy device on the first class.
