Many of you are working right now on your next big app idea. Thousands of lines of code, designs and sketches will get you to a point where you are ready to launch. What should you do next? Pick a name real quick and launch of course.

Wrong! Keep in mind there are millions of apps being created, published and downloaded everyday, you owe it to yourself and your potential users to an app-worthy name. That sweet name you had in mind? Yeah someone already thought of it first.

But don’t despair! Just follow these 5 tips on how to land a sweet name and create a brand for your app:

1. Check if your name is taken: You’ve been thinking and coming up with name ideas for your app. You probably have a list. Now take that list and search the app store, google play and search engines. Scratch away those that are taken, part of another app name or are phonetically similar to something else. This should reduce your list to only a few possible names.

2. Once you’ve got a unique name list, search for your domain: Keep in mind that the domain is your app’s home. Look for something short and easy to remember. If you find a domain you like but taken, try adding ‘app’ before the .com or try a different TLD (.co, .me, you get it!)

3. Design a sweet logo: Make it simple, but keep a connection with your apps core. Simplicity is important cause you will be using it on icons and small screens; your design must look good and readable in any device.

4. Logo must maintain a strong connection with the apps purpose: Let’s go back and make this an important point. You know the app inside out, but you also need to convey it’s purpose to your users. Will people understand it? Does the logo say something about the app? Ask yourself as many questions as you need to make sure the job is done right.

5. The app’s icon is as important as the logo: Remember that the icon is going to be the brand of your app on your user’s device homescreen. Make it memorable and pleasant for to the eyes. Just as the logo, keep the icon simple.
