Idena Core Team Update

  1. IIPs and hard fork update
  2. Idena website rebranding
  3. Shared node proxy update
  4. Tokens on the blockchain explorer

We have made several proposals aimed at improving the Idena protocol and strengthening its security. These changes will be included into the next hard fork update. Date of the hardfork release will be published soon. Follow our announcements.

IIP-9 Change the epoch length

An increase in the frequency of validations could act as a deterrent for some individuals as they would need to allocate more time to create flips and perform validations. This, in turn, may lead to an outflow of independent miners rather than pool accounts, further exacerbating the network’s decentralization.

With this proposal, we suggest setting a minimum epoch duration of 14 days, except in cases where the network size is small. The validation day will gradually transition to Saturdays.

IIP-9: https://docs.idena.io/docs/iip/iip-9

Discussion: https://github.com/idena-network/idena-docs/discussions/139

The Oracle voting was launched on this proposal. As a result, a majority of validated identities (78%) have expressed their support for it.

The changes will be included in the next hard fork.

IIP-10 Stake protection for Zombie status

With the current protocol, stakes of identities with Zombie status are fully burnt in case of missing validation (see IIP-4). This is one of the reasons why many individuals prefer to kill their identities with Zombie status to keep their stakes safe. However, having to start all over again might discourage them, and could potentially cause them to leave the project.

The IIP-10 is aimed to ease the life of identities with Zombie status. Missing a validation will no longer result in the complete burning of their stake. It will be implemented the same manner as in the case of validation failure. Now keeping your identity alive for 10+ epochs will be rewarded with full stake protection.

IIP-10: https://docs.idena.io/docs/iip/iip-10

Discussion: https://github.com/idena-network/idena-docs/discussions/141

The Oracle voting on the IIP-10 is launched but not yet finished. If you took part in this voting, do not forget to publish your public vote. Every vote matters.

If a majority of voters support this proposal, the changes will be included in the next hard fork.

IIP-11: Increasing the cost of 51% attack

At present, to attack the network or any voting it is enough to validate a certain number of accounts (51% of the network size) by paying individuals to participate in the validation ceremony and operate separate mining nodes instead of delegating into a pool.

To increase the cost of an attack on the Idena network we propose disregarding votes from identities with stake amounts below a certain threshold. The threshold is set dynamically based on the median stake of top validated accounts which prevents a malicious attacker with a large number of identities from manipulating the threshold.

The threshold is selected in a way that, in the event of pool account undelegation, a significant majority of these accounts are severed by applying this threshold.

Please read the proposal for more details.

IIP-11: https://docs.idena.io/docs/iip/iip-11

Discussion: https://github.com/idena-network/idena-docs/discussions/143

As this change affects the protocol security, there will be no preliminary Oracle voting regarding IIP-11. This change will be voted on by the validators at the next hard fork activation.

Idena website rebranding

If you are following the official Idena account on Twitter, you may already be aware that we have been working on rebranding the Idena website.

The new design is modern and eye-catching, with a clean layout and a clear message about core values and unique features of Idena, making it easier for potential users to understand the whole concept and become part of the Idena network. Stay tuned!

Shared Node Proxy update

We have added request caching to reduce the load on shared nodes. If you are a node operator, please update the proxy for your shared node:

https://github.com/idena-network/idena-node-proxy/releases/tag/v1.2.0

Tokens on the blockchain explorer

Now you can see a list of IRC20 tokens on your address.

The list of all your tokens and balances is displayed on the Token Holdings page.

You can also view the list of token holders for a specific token.

Q&A from IDENA dev team

We have received numerous questions from the community. Thank you for such active engagement! We have selected the most interesting questions and are providing answers to them.

Q: “When someone is reported during ceremonies, are their rewards redistributed to other people or burnt? What is the motivation behind any of these options?” (by Zen)

Currently, reporting leads to a redistribution of rewards among participants. This was done before rewards for reporting were introduced. The redistribution of rewards increased the rewards for those who were not reported. However, after the direct rewards for reporting were implemented, the indirect increase in rewards became insignificant. If there are arguments in favor of burning, we are ready to support such a change. IIPs are welcomed.

Q: “What was that transfer of 150k iDNA from the foundation wallet about?https://scan.idena.io/transaction/0xeea22b258c4f4886de7e1c53f44f6981978c50121b871f8a9660554a980ce890 Would be nice to know the purpose of such transfers, to prevent FUD like “Ahh, the devs are dumping on us, sell it all!” (by EDM)

We never sell coins on the market or place large sell orders that would suppress the price. The OTC transactions we conduct through the exchange occur at a pre-agreed price through the order book. The transfer of 150k coins to the exchange was done in response to BitMart’s requirement to maintain minimum liquidity in the order book.

Q: “Is there any initiative or a plan to do some marketing in order to attract more people to the network? In a sea of new projects everyday, Idena seems to constantly tank despite the fact that it is innovative in a way. (by KriptoBaggins)

Yes, we have a plan. As we have mentioned in previous Chronicles, Identity staking is an innovative tool and the only means of maintaining decentralization for crypto projects (many of them have become entangled in plutocracy and manipulation). Regulators are paying more and more attention to crypto space and recognize the majority of tokens as securities. We consider this to be a natural phenomenon. Identity primitive and sub-linear staking may be the last hope for ensuring decentralization. This has sparked interest among top influencers, and we hope to publish the results of our collaboration in the near future.

Q: “What are you going to do with the issue of liquidity? There were plans for Tier 1 exchange a year ago, even announced in the Telegram channel. Right now there is no significant volume, the price barely moves, only bots trade it on Bitmart. Hotbit delisted, Probit delisted, PancakeSwap volume barely 22$ daily. The price doesnt even react to Bitcoin moves anymore. (by KriptoBaggins)

The Idena team does not provide liquidity on PancakeSwap. The liquidity pool on PancakeSwap is formed by community funds and trading volume is organic. The BSC bridge was created by community members, and our role is to support its operation. We have previously mentioned that we have been in negotiations with other centralized exchanges regarding the listing of IDNA. However, the listing cost has been a hindering factor ($250k-$1M).

Q: “You mentioned the importance of creating unique stories to make flips more AI resistant. Are you considering the implementation of a grading mechanism that would assign a grade to each flip based on its uniqueness? If not, what are the blockers to the implementation of this type of grading mechanism?” (by Justin Miles)

The classification of story uniqueness is an important feature. We believe that non-unique flips should be reported and disqualified, similar to flips that violate any other rules. This doesn’t require changing the protocol but may involve modifying the UI/UX. We would be interested to hear your suggestions for improving the UI during the qualification session that would not add additional complexity for users (or extra time and clicks). We strive to make the validation session as clear as possible for newcomers and minimize the actions required from users. Otherwise, we risk encountering a counterproductive effect. For example, when some users do not approve flips, we had to refine the protocol and exclude such users from the consensus.

Q: “Many people cannot properly use the Idena WebApp to create their flips because it is not adapted to the mobile format. Are you planning on modifying the mobile and tablet versions to simplify this task for users?” (by Morienzo)

The mobile version of the flip editor seems to be a feature in demand by a very small number of users. However, implementing this feature to make the editor fully functional on mobile devices requires significant efforts. Overall, we assume that Idena users have access to a PC. Mobile-only users are obviously not the target audience of Idena. Therefore, despite the desirability and potential usefulness of making flips on mobile in certain situations, it has a low priority.

Q: “The keyword combinations are oftentimes very hard and it makes the flip creation very difficult. Is there a plan to introduce a newer word list, including a large list of more general words such as colors/emotions/reactions/places and so on?” (by KriptoBaggins)

A pair of key words ensures the entropy (diversity and uniqueness) of flips. Some categories of words do not contribute to increasing entropy. For example, colors. If you are given a color (such as red) as a word, the story will be created based on the second word, and the required color will be guaranteed to be present on at least one of the four pictures.

If you have more questions post it in the comments below. We will pick the most interesting questions to answer them in the next Chronicles.

Hello Idenians, I hope you are all doing well! With new epochs comes the time to share the latest updates from our community, so without any delay let’s get straight into it!

Idena Network: an answer to the dystopian future proposed by Worldcoin

The recent buzz on Twitter surrounding OpenAI with ChatGPT has been hard to miss. But the CEO, Sam Altman, also generated a lot of discussions on his second project, Worldcoin, a crypto project around digital decentralized identity.

We talked about it in the past but this project recently gained renewed attention due to Sam Altman’s new aura. Thus it’s a good moment to remind how far ahead Idena Network is in terms of preserving user privacy. Unlike traditional systems like Worldcoin that collect personal and even biometric data, Idena remains committed to decentralized identity and ensures there is no central point of failure for data collection. Moreover, what sets Idena apart is also its ability to grant identities in a transparent and auditable manner, allowing everyone to verify the process without permission. As highlighted by our community member Adli, Idena stands as the only free Sybil Resistant KYCless POP layer 1 solution at the moment.

While Worldcoin may present itself as an alternative, it is a great timing to expose its terrible flaws. Because at least what is genuinely exciting is the increasing interest in decentralized identity and proof-of-person protocols. It is within this context that the Idena Community can make a significant impact by highlighting the strengths of Idena in contrast to projects like Worldcoin. Let’s continue sharing our message in discussions and threads concerning Worldcoin and highlight the specific qualities that set Idena apart from such dystopian projects.

Holismo, a new dApp built on Idena

Good news from our Community member Morienzo who has started a new project on Idena named Holismo.

The pitch of Holismo define the project that way:

« Holismo is an open, collaborative, and decentralized cyber-democracy project. Each identity on the Idena network can engage in this democracy and earn NFTs as rewards. The results of each vote will be communicated to all countries of the world (regardless of their political regime) and to the relevant non-governmental organizations. A follow-up of the results and responses will be carried out and made public. Governance is organized around various roles accessible through election, entrance exams, or innovative proposals. Some of these roles will be paid in IDNA depending on the workload required. »

A lot more will be uncovered as the development goes on. Stay tuned on Twitter https://twitter.com/HolismoApp or on Idena Community Discord (join the channel #holismo)!
