Hard fork activation

The hard fork update has been successfully activated at the block number 5371207. It was supported by a super majority of Idena validators.

Read more about the hard fork changes here.

Idena websites update

The documentation on the docs.idena.io and FAQ on idena.io website is updated in accordance with the latest changes after the hard fork.

The blockchain explorer is also updated to show extra flips rewards and invitee’s rewards correctly. Besides, it was noticed that pool rewards are inconsistent on different pages after the hard fork. This issue was fixed.

Also, please note that the issue with registration of new users on translate.idena.io was fixed. Community translations for idena.io website are available again.

IIP-6 progress

According to IIP-6 the invitation rewards fund is now distributed between inviters and invitees. After the last validation the distribution was as follows:

Here are the average rewards received by invitees:

As you can see, the possible rewards are quite substantial and they incentivise newcomers to set up and run a mining node and earn on quadratic mining. Moreover, as newbies can not terminate their accounts and withdraw their stake, they are more likely to pass 3 validations in a row to unlock the rewards. Taking into account these assumptions the conversion ratio should increase in the next several epochs. We will continue monitoring these metrics and keep you updated.

IIP-7 Progress

Anticipating the big rewards for extra flips, Idena participants started to make optional flips again. In epoch 97 (before the hard fork) only 339 identities made extra flips. In epoch 99 this number increased more than 2 times. By looking at the share of extra flip authors relative to the network size, we see that it rose significantly.

This is not surprising, because the rewards for extra flips are now high and pay off the time spent on making good flips.

Hopefully this trend of more individuals creating optional flips will continue and the network will be filled with more diverse flips as a result.

Flip editor update in the Web app

Have you seen the updated Flip editor which generates a nonsense image? If not, go to the Web app and play around with it.

A nonsense image is shown as a combination of random images searched by the keywords. It is possible to regenerate the image if it looks like something that makes sense (and users can interpret it as a part of the story) or if it has some text (sometimes the source images have text).

We recommend using a nonsense image in your flips as it provides an extra layer of AI flip protection. Google Vision or any other image recognition apps recognize the objects in the generated image as something meaningful. On the contrary, a person can clearly distinguish this image as nonsense and not take it into account when solving a flip.

Using a nonsense image in your flip is optional. It is still possible to unlock the 4th image and make a flip as usual.

New reporting rules

Starting from epoch 100, the new reporting rules will be applied and the corresponding pop up form will be shown. Please read them carefully and take them into account when creating flips.

Prediction Market Challenge

The first Prediction Market on Idena smart contracts is successfully finished (see details here). A reward of 50,000 iDNA was sent to the community dev team: Fireshift#8654, Toni.Dev#190, Zen#9156

Please note that decentralized prediction markets are not just for fun. They provide public surveillance of the collusion-resistance and the honesty of Idena oracles when they certify facts.

Good news that there were no malicious votes in confirming the winner of the FIFA World Cup by Idena Oracles. It means that fact certification for smart contracts could be done in a fully decentralized way by Idena human oracles.

Corea Hard Fork Update 1.0.0

We are glad to announce that the testing of smart contracts is almost complete. We plan to release a major node update, released as version 1.0.0. The hard fork update will be called “Corea Hard Fork”.

The hard fork update will enable creating custom smart contracts. Smart contracts will be executed in the high performance webassembly runtime. Node versions for Linux, Windows and MacOS will be supported.

What makes Idena Smart contracts different from other blockchains:

  • Turing complete smart contracts on Idena will allow developers to create any human-centric DApps (e.g. decentralized social networks) in addition to traditional DeFi applications.
  • Idena smart contracts will be natively integrated with Idena Oracles which can provide a decentralized gateway to the real world data.
  • Idena Oracles in combination with quadratic token voting enable Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) to be sustainable over time.
  • With the ability to mine iDNA with no upfront investment, Idena makes on-chain transactions and socially oriented DApps accessible to anyone.
  • Instant finality of Idena transactions provides a great experience for DApps users.
  • Idena’s PoP consensus enables future horizontal scalability empowered by the network growth. Greater number of validators will allow switching to the sharded architecture and keep transaction fees at a low level. Asynchronous transactions together with blockchain sharding will enable parallel transaction execution and high tps.

The release is scheduled for February 2023. The exact date will be announced later. Follow our updates.

Idena Node fixes

The following bug fixes will be included in the next hard fork:

  • a bug with incorrect calculation of basic rewards for extra flips. In addition to extra rewards, basic rewards for optional flips will be paid out in the same way as for mandatory flips.
  • a bug with terminating a delegated identity with status Suspended or Zombie by a pool owner. Stake of the terminated identity will be sent to the pool owner’s address.

Community updates

Edited by Syd

Hello Humans! First of all, I’m wishing you all a Happy New Year. As a community, we’ve come a long way in the past year, overcoming many challenges and helping Idena gain the recognition it deserves.

This year promises to be exciting as well, starting off with the big news of quadratic rewards being extended to invitations and extra flips, made possible by Idena’s sybil resistance. So… happy hard fork as well to everyone! A new year starts for Idena with a network stronger than ever. Let’s get into it.

The World Cup 2022 Prediction Market: Challenge accepted by the community!

Last month, Idena team announced a challenge to run a prediction market on the World Cup Final on Idena (ICYMI: https://medium.com/idena/50-000-idna-reward-run-idena-prediction-market-on-the-fifa-world-cup-qatar-2022-abc776b6b7f0).

Using Oracle smart contracts on a Proof-of-Person blockchain to run a prediction market which is settled by human oracles is indeed a major potential use case for Idena.

This challenge was accepted and successfully accomplished by Zen, Toni_Dev and Fireshift. Congratulations to them!

Note that settlement was accomplished through an Idena Oracle, showing no manipulation or collusion attempt and perfectly fulfilling its mission.

But that’s not all! I-bet.top platform has plans to expand into more prediction markets… Keep an eye out for more information in the future and stay tuned!

IIP-8 regarding Pool voting rights: a community proposal led by Zen

The recent hard fork activation included IIP-8, which addresses pool voting rights by adjusting the discrimination mechanism for recently undelegated identities. This update allows them to change pools or create their own family pools without the need to wait for 3 epochs.

This IIP was proposed by Zen (https://docs.idena.io/docs/iip/iip-8) following a discussion with developers (https://github.com/idena-network/idena-docs/discussions/104).

Again, just a friendly reminder that everyone can participate and play a role in building Idena!

Introducing the new Idena Discord Bot by Bus

Community developer Bus has created a great new Discord bot that offers a wide range of functionalities such as tracking the price, the pools, some identities statistics, transactions, and other chain-related statistics.

Some illustrations:

It’s easy to use and provides a wide range of data on the fly. Come check it out in #price-talk-exchange on the community discord (https://discord.gg/UrsDEHMs)!

Making good flips and improve network security

Creating high-quality flips is an essential part of Idena as sybil resistance is crucial to its security. The process of creating a good flip has always been a key part of introducing others to Idena; you might even remember that we had in the past a dedicated community led “flip school” for selecting invited individuals.

However, over time, people’s attention may have shifted and making good flips may have become less of a priority. Therefore we have many community proposals on this topic (see https://github.com/idena-network/idena-docs/discussions/96 and https://github.com/idena-network/idena-docs/discussions/103)

With the new year and likely many newcomers to follow, it’s a ideal opportunity to remind everyone to share community made tutorials on creating higher quality flips:

Additionally, flip master and legend @cryptogeek555 shared with us some valuable tips to create original flips:

Notable tweets

  • ICYMI, Andrew participation in Bankless podcast is a must see (see previous Chronicles), but if you missed it here’s another recap from @ReveloIntel:
