Network metrics

Active miners — total number of actively mining identities running their own mining nodes or delegated into mining pools.

Mining nodes — total number of full mining nodes run by individual identities or pool owners who activated online status.

Newcomers — number of addresses that validated for the first time

Success ratio — share of users attended the validation and successfully validated

Active wallets — unique wallets that made transactions during the last epoch

Competitors

Network stats

Markets

Node type stats for the last validation

Nodes on VPS — users running their nodes on VPS

Built-in nodes — users of the Idena Desktop App with build-in node

Shared nodes (web) — Web App users renting shared nodes via marketplace

N/A — users running outdated versions of nodes (VPS/built-in nodes)

Unknown shared nodes (web ) — Web App users who connect to shared nodes that are not listed in the Idena shared nodes marketplace

The data is given for the latest validation.

To have a smooth and reliable validation ceremony experience, we recommend using VPS or built-in nodes if you have fast Internet connection and good router, or the nodes listed in the node marketplace in the official Idena Web App in other cases.

Even though the size of the network is decreasing, we see that the number of validators is growing in percentage terms. This means that the drop in the network is due to a decrease in the number of identities that do not run the node, i.e. do not contribute to the network, and a decline in the number of identities in the pools. This is also proved by the chart below. The red line shows a downward trend in the number of identities in non-family pools (pools with more than 15 identities).

The Green Pill podcast episode

If you missed the Green Pill podcast episode with Kevin Owocki and Andrew, the co-founder of IDENA, check this out:

Flips compression bug fix

During the last validation, there were problems with loading flips at the largest pool. It is likely that this was due to a bug of increasing the size of flips after the introduction of adversarial noise. The size of all flips in the network grew 10 times, which led to an increase in the load on all shared nodes. Apparently, the nodes of large pools could not withstand the load. The shared nodes from the marketplace handled the load much better, but some of them also had problems.

We have fixed the flip compression bug. After testing, it will be released in the next version of the Idena app.

Onboarding for new users

We updated the onboarding process for new users so they can get familiar with the main features of the Idena app (e.g. run a democratic voting, promote goods and services on-chain in an anonymous and decentralized way, earn rewards by being an Idena validator).

New tutorial mode for training validation

To make it easier to learn how to solve flips, we have added a tutorial mode with hints for training validation. If a flip is solved incorrectly, it is shown immediately and a user can choose the correct answer.

Similarly, if the report/approval of the flip was not set correctly, then a hint appears indicating the reason for the report.

New users first go through this mode and then solve the training validation to get a certificate.

The tutorial mode is also available at the Training validation certificates page. It will facilitate the learning process for newcomers and let them easily get the training certificate.

IIP-7 Quadratic rewards for extra flips

We have implemented the IIP-7 Quadratic rewards for extra flips to encourage people to make more extra flips and thus increase the number of flips created by independent users. The changes are related to the distribution of the Flip reward fund (35% of total rewards). It will be divided into basic flip rewards (15%) and extra flip rewards (20%).

The rewards for extra flips will be calculated in proportion to the size of the stake to the power of 0.9. Please read the proposal here.

As the results of the corresponding Oracle vote show, the majority of the Idena community supports the proposed changes. They will be included into the upcoming hard fork.

IIP-8 Pool voting rights

The IIP-8 was proposed by one of the community members @Zen. The proposed improvement is aimed to allow identities to change pools or create their own pools without waiting for 3 epochs. See the details here.

After reviewing the proposal, we see that it does not affect the economy or security. Thus, the Oracle voting is not needed. We will include the IIP-8 change into the upcoming hard fork for update.

Upcoming hard fork update

The hard fork update will be released on December 16th. It will be the last hard fork update in 2022. See more details.

Smart contracts

We are pleased to announce that the main work on integrating the webassembly runtime into the Idena node for executing custom smart contracts has been completed. We have prepared node builds for Linux, Windows and MacOS.

In the test version of the node, it is possible to deploy custom wasm-based smart contracts. Due to the need for extensive testing, we plan to release a node with custom smart contracts in the 1st quarter of 2023. This will be a major node version update released with the number 1.0.0 and named “Corea Hard Fork” (dedicated to Armando Anthony Chick Corea who is the favorite jazz musician of Andrew, co-founder of Idena).

Custom smart contracts on Idena will allow developers to create any socially-oriented DApps. Smart contracts can be easily integrated with Oracle voting. DAOs can use Oracle votes in combination with quadratic token voting to provide sustainable decentralization over time. With quadratic staking and the ability to mine iDNA with no upfront investment, Idena makes on-chain transactions and socially-oriented DApps accessible to anyone.

Community updates

Hello Humans! As the next hard fork approaches, let’s get into some news from the Community.

Idena Network featured in Bankless on the “Green Pill” podcast

Idena was featured on the famous Bankless Show, in the latest Green Pill podcast presented by Kevin Owocki. In the podcast, Andrew was able to present every aspects of Idena to a large audience and raise the awareness on the sybil resistance topic.

You can check it out here:

Spike also made a great thread about it, presenting every important points mentioned during the podcast:

Idena as an auth method on Telegram? A suggestion made by Fireshift

Sybil resistance is an important topic for all social networks, and we are all well aware of the issues that bots cause to it.

Community member Fireshift (Ltraveler) raised a thread on the Telegram forum, suggesting to use Idena as an auth method. It’s a good opportunity to make people aware of this possibility and how Idena can be leveraged to that extend.

Let’s upvote and keep commenting the thread to make it more visible! https://bugs.telegram.org/c/22195

Flip Wars Tournament : Epoch 94 Edition

Another round of flip wars was organized by EDM (@Relight_Motion) with Вуле claiming the final victory. Congratulations to him!

The tournament saw some epic flips, especially this duel with Lobster/Gate as keywords:

It’s also a great moment to remember that the pool-prize is funded by the Community according to the established rules of governance (https://medium.com/idena/idena-chronicles-epoch-0092-7a972b5f079f). Moreover Flip Wars are a great event which are also a cool method of promoting good “flipping”.

A success made possible by the community and EDM!
