Network metrics

Active miners — total number of actively mining identities running their own mining nodes or delegated into mining pools.

Mining nodes — total number of full mining nodes run by individual identities or pool owners who activated online status.

Newcomers — number of addresses that validated for the first time

Success ratio — share of users attended the validation and successfully validated

Active wallets — unique wallets that made transactions during the last epoch

Competitors

Network stats

Markets

Node type stats for the last validation

Nodes on VPS — users running their nodes on VPS

Built-in nodes — users of the Idena Desktop App with build-in node

Shared nodes (web) — Web App users renting shared nodes via marketplace

N/A — users running outdated versions of nodes (VPS/built-in nodes)

Unknown shared nodes (web ) — Web App users who connect to shared nodes that are not listed in the Idena shared nodes marketplace

The data is given for the latest validation.

To have a smooth and reliable validation ceremony experience, we recommend using VPS or built-in nodes if you have fast Internet connection and good router, or the nodes listed in the node marketplace in the official Idena Web App in other cases.

Reporting performance

Fortunately, the number of users who had used most of their reports over the last validation has increased — that proves that the community becomes more aware of how important it is to report and how reporting affects the security of the network. Yet, the number of users who do not report at all also grows, and the overall proportion stays the same. We will monitor the situation in dynamic for several more epochs. And if we fail to change it by education and persuasion, we will have to introduce more incentives and fines for reporting on the protocol level.

Many of us became more aware of the importance of reporting, but it’s not enough yet, and we have to keep going to secure the network. We have to repeat our call to arms: tell your invitees about the importance of reporting! Not only about the rewards, but also, and in the first place, about the effect of the reporting on the security of the network. Every identity that skips reporting is a weak link in the network security. Explain to your invitees why reporting is important. Tell them about the rewards and security. And check after the validation if all your invitees used their reports on bad flips.

Random reporting scenario model

There is an active and ongoing discussion in the community about reporting bad flips. The root of the problem is that users keep making a lot of bad flips that do not contain both keywords or do not meet the good flip criteria. Bad flips can be stopped by the reporting mechanics built into the Idena protocol. But here comes another problem: network participants do not report bad flips during the validation, allowing bad actors to get away with their half-baked flips or even get rewarded for it.

One of the possible solutions can be to penalize the users who haven’t used all the reports they have while they faced bad flips during the validation (that were reported by other users). But then everyone will use all reports no matter if the flips are good or bad, which can result in wrong reporting of good flips. To prevent random reporting, the protocol can also penalize the users who use more than M of their reports (later we take M = 30% of all reports the user has, or 2 reports) to report the flips that haven’t been reported by any other users.

We have tested these mechanics on two models to check how many users would be penalized:

  1. Last validation (Epoch#80): 1783 users would be penalized for not reporting bad flips which were reported by others
  2. Last validation, if all users spend all their remaining reports randomly: 891 users would be penalized for random reporting

The model shows that if the protocol will penalize the participants for not using all reports, it will be more financially effective to report randomly than to report bad flips only, even with a penalty for random reporting. So far, the suggested solutions can’t efficiently solve the reporting problem. But we will research other options and will be happy to discuss more proposals from the community.

Idena Core Team Development

Node update v0.28.4

A new version of the node, v0.28.4, has been released. The changes include IPFS update, RPC refactoring, and other minor upgrades to improve stability.

Among the other updates, the new node version received a fix that prevents it from crashing when the nonce is lost during the validation ceremony. Now the nonce is cached to provide a fallback for the node in this case.

Web App mobile: wallets page

Idena Web App got a new wallets page optimized for mobile devices. Now it is even easier to send iDNA and check your balance on the go from the comfort of your smartphone.

IIP: Idena Improvement Proposals section in Idena Docs

As the Idena community grows, we see more and more well-thought improvement proposals being discussed in community channels. We think it’s time to make a dedicated place to collect and discuss all the proposals being made. That is why we have added the Idena Improvement Proposals section to the Idena Docs. Everyone can make their proposal and submit it for discussion. If the proposal gains enough traction, it can be voted for by an oracle. And if the network supports the proposal, it will be implemented in the protocol.

Idena Affiliate Program

The rewards for the Idena Affiliate Program have been paid to all referrers who have validated candidates for the last validation:

The conditions of the affiliate program have been updated. Starting from Epoch #81 (validation on February 12), the reward for a validated invite will depend on the validation success rate of the affiliate. This will help to prevent invite drain and will allow the affiliates who invest more in educating their candidates to earn more rewards.

Everyone can apply to become an affiliate. Get your referral link, invite people to Idena and earn for each validated identity you brought! Find how to start on the Affiliate Program page.

Hello Humans! What’s the best way to start the Community Chronicles if not with some great insights on Idena Roadmap?

The Humanetics Workshop featuring Idena

The Humanetics Workshop, «An interdisciplinary community of scholars, researchers, and practitioners advancing the field of proof of personhood» organized a Twitter Space for PoP enthusiasts a week ago. Andrew was invited and shared some news about the Idena roadmap.

In case you missed it, you can find the abstract here :

Improving the flip report system: how the community can be a force of proposal

Bugaga2000 recently made a proposal regarding the flip report system that led to great discussions with other community members. Eventually, Andrew acknowledged several points that were raised and stated that they will be considered by the core team (follow the discussion here https://discord.com/channels/634481767352369162/647573315640098817/934839561387921539)

In general, if you are looking for constructive discussions about Idena or have your own ideas that you want to introduce regarding the protocol, you are more than welcome in the channel #platform-suggestions on the Idena Discord. As you can see, everyone is welcome to help building Idena.

The governance project is still an ongoing work (ICYMI, Ubiubi proposal: https://ubiubi2018.medium.com/proposal-for-governance-mechanism-for-idena-community-wallet-1d3f42819a50).

We share the excitement and will focus on deploying step-by-step the necessary tools to make this governance plan effective (selecting community delegates chosen by lottocracy and adapted mechanisms, accessibility of the multisig for the community wallet…). If you are interested in working and/or discussing this topic, please come to Idena Discord and join the dedicated channel (#community-wallet-governance).
