When it comes to digital identity, the treatment of personal data is broken. It’s time for a paradigm shift.

If you’re interested in the latest innovations to authenticate legitimate customers and fight online fraud, there’s a good chance you already subscribe to the One World Identity podcast to keep up with the latest developments. Even if you’re not, this series provides a valuable perspective on one of the fundamental building blocks that holds our digital society together — our online identities.

This week Cameron D’Ambrosi talked to Uri Arad and Shmuli Goldberg about an anticipated paradigm shift in how we approach the whole question of identity verification. Companies continually face the challenge of checking whether someone is who they say they are. To do that, they turn to third parties who look up the user information in their databases. That process, necessarily, means that companies are sharing their users’ personal data with those third parties — even when they don’t realize it.

In today’s world data breaches have become expected, and consumers and regulators are newly aware of — and concerned about — the privacy of users’ personal data. A system that routinely shares that data with third parties no longer seems appropriate. Until recently, companies had no choice. But now they do.

Cameron excitedly discussed Identiq’s F.A.I.R. technology and its potential for groundbreaking improvement in the way users’ personal data is treated. If companies can collaborate without sharing users’ personal data, the third party problem suddenly disappears.

Uri explained how validating identities without sharing, copying or transferring data isn’t just possible, it’s actually more intuitive than you’d think. Shmuli talked about how this technology can help companies provide better customer experience and get ahead of the regulatory shift towards data protection. And of course the two of them had a lot more to say as well.
