Thorium is the 39th most abundant metal available in the earth’s crust. Soil also contains an average of 6 wppm of thorium. It is about three times more abundant than uranium. It was discovered by the Swedish chemist Jons Jakob Berzelius in 1838, who named it after the name of the Norse god of thunder “Thor”.
