Mersal Box Office Collection: Vijay makes record with 6th 100 crore movie; racing towards 150 crore mark
Vijay’s Mersal has been creating records since the day the teaser of the movie was released, and it seems like Mersal box office collection will see another record being made. The movie crossed the 100 crore mark on Saturday and is racing towards the 150 crore mark.
Vijay’s Mersal features him in triple roles. AR Rahaman’s music seems to be one of the highlights of the movie. Another highlight of the teaser and the movie is Vijay himself who seems to be on his top form in the film. The dialogue delivery in the teaser seems to be whistle-worthy and will surely make the audience go mad at the theatres but it has already been troubled by the BJP over the remarks on GST and Medical Care. One of the dialogue from the 1 min 16 second teaser is “The spark of fire you set aflame, will ask you to blaze in all its glory. The deeds of karma you sowed, will wait to slice and stamp you with fury.” Mersal box office collection in the opening shows clearly make it Thalapathy’s highest grossing opening.
There are many points which make the movie an absolute delight to watch like the grand action sequences, crisp editing and the visuals which seem to be larger than life. The movie has been received fairly well by the critics as well who have justified it to be a mass entertainer directed towards a certain kind of audience. Mersal released in more than 550 screens in Tamilnadu alone.
With nearly 100% occupancy in the prime locations and 75–85% occupancy in smaller areas in the opening shows, the movie was speculated to break records. Mersal Box office collection for Chennai city on the opening day broke earlier records set by Vivegam which earned Rs 1.21 crore on the opening day. Mersal has earned Rs 1.48 crore on the opening day in Chennai theatres despite costly tickets after the implementation of double tax.
Mersal box office collection on day 1 stood at Rs 43.50 crore as the movie earned Rs 31.50 crore in India and Rs 12 crore overseas. In Tamil Nadu, the movie had been able to rake in Rs 18–19 crore on the first day. By the second day, the movie had raked in around Rs 70 crores in the world wide collections. On Saturday, Mersal box office collection crossed the Rs 100 crore mark and Sunday being a holiday, the movie went on to collect further positive returns. Vijay also became the only South Indian actor to have achieved the feat of having 6 movies raking over Rs 100 crore. While the estimates for the Sunday collection are not out yet, the early estimates state that the movie has earned a total of Rs 110 crore over the weekend.
The movie had done a business of Rs 156 crores in pre-release and is expected to make it big at the box office. The movie stars Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menon as the three female leads for Vijay’s triple role. Mersal is directed by Atlee who has co-written the film with K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. Ramana Girivasan. The editing department is helmed by Ruben while the Cinematography is done by G.K. Vishnu.
