Mersal Box Office Collection: Will it be the first Vijay film to earn Rs 200 crore, collected Rs 75 crore in Tamil Nadu alone

Mersal box office collection might be on its way to make another record after being the highest opener and highest grossing film in Chennai. Despite controversies over the tiff between the ruling party BJP and Vijay over the GST and hospital care dialogues, the movie seems to attract audience and is on its way to being a blockbuster.

Vijay’s Mersal features him in triple roles. AR Rahaman’s music seems to be one of the highlights of the movie. Another highlight of the teaser and the movie is Vijay himself who seems to be on his top form in the film. There are many points which make the movie an absolute delight to watch like the grand action sequences, crisp editing and the visuals which seem to be larger than life. The movie has been received fairly well by the critics as well who have justified it to be a mass entertainer directed towards a certain kind of audience. Mersal released in more than 550 screens in Tamilnadu alone.

With nearly 100% occupancy in the prime locations and 75–85% occupancy in smaller areas in the opening shows, the movie was speculated to break records. Mersal Box office collection in Chennai on the opening day broke earlier records set by Vivegam which earned Rs 1.21 crore on the opening day. Mersal has earned Rs 1.48 crore on the opening day in Chennai theatres despite costly tickets after the implementation of double tax.

Mersal box office collection on day 1 stood at Rs 43.50 crore and by the second day, the movie had raked in around Rs 70 crores in the world wide collections. On Saturday, Mersal box office collection crossed the Rs 100 crore mark and Sunday being a holiday, the movie went on to collect further positive returns. Vijay also became the only South Indian actor to have achieved the feat of having 6 movies raking over Rs 100 crore. The movie was speculated to have earned Rs 110 crore by Sunday but according to report now, the worldwide collection of the movie stands at Rs 150 crore. The movie had done a business of Rs 156 crores in pre-release and is expected to make it big at the box office. The movie stars Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menon as the three female leads for Vijay’s triple role. Mersal is directed by Atlee who has co-written the film with K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. Ramana Girivasan. The editing department is helmed by Ruben while the Cinematography is done by G.K. Vishnu.
